An assessment of feature relevance in predicting protein function from sequence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Improving the performance of protein function prediction is the ultimate goal for a bioinformatician working in functional genomics. The classical prediction approach is to employ pairwise sequence alignments. However this method often faces difficulties

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Chimerization of antibodies by isolation of rearranged genomic variable regions by the polymerase chain reaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
We describe a new method for amplification, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), of rearranged segments encoding the variable part of light and heavy chains of an antibody (Ab) from the chromosomal DNA of hybridoma cells for the chimerization ofAbs.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

A New Nonsmooth Bundle-Type Approach for a Class of Functional Equations in Hilbert Spaces

open access: yesJournal of Function Spaces, 2017
A new bundle-type approach for solving a class of functional equations is presented by combining bundle idea for nonsmooth optimization with common iterative process for functional equations.

Cassette hybridization for vector assembly application in antibody chain shuffling

open access: yesBioTechniques, 2018
Gene assembly methods are an integral part of molecular cloning experiments. The majority of existing vector assembly methods stipulate a need for exonucleases, endonucleases and/or the use of single-stranded DNA as starting materials.

The effect of functional roles on group efficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The usefulness of ‘roles’ as a pedagogical approach to support small group performance can be often read, however, their effect is rarely empirically assessed.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
