Synthesis and role of melanin for tolerating in vitro rumen digestion in Duddingtonia flagrans, a nematode-trapping fungus

open access: yesMycology, 2019
We describe the synthesis and a function of melanin in Duddingtonia flagrans, a nematode-trapping fungus. We tested various culture media treated with L-DOPA, glucose and tricyclazole on fungal growth and melanin distribution using infrared spectroscopy (

Nail Toxicities Associated With Anticancer Therapies in Children

open access: yesJEADV Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nail toxicities are a frequent yet often underrecognized component of dermatologic adverse events in children receiving anticancer therapies. Both conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy and newer targeted agents can affect the nail matrix, nail bed and periungual tissues, producing a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations that range from ...

13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectra of Fungal Melanins [PDF]

open access: yesZeitschrift für Naturforschung C, 1978
Abstract The 13C resonance spectra of fungal melanins from Aspergillu sniger, Eurotium echinolatum , and Stachybotrys chartarum are reported. The spectra were taken in 5% W/W solution of the substances in 0.1 ɴ NaOD in D2O using the Fourier-transform-technique. The spectra and possible as signments of the bands are discussed.

Lichen bleaching as a response to long‐term experimental warming in the High Arctic

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Lichens are an important component of Arctic ecosystems. Studies have indicated a decline in the abundance of Arctic lichens during recent decades, which is often attributed to competitive pressure from vascular plants.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Protein Kinase A Controls the Melanization of Candida auris through the Alteration of Cell Wall Components

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2023
Candida auris, a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen, significantly threatens global public health. Recent studies have identified melanin production, a key virulence factor in many pathogenic fungi that protects against external threats like reactive ...
