Structure and Nanomechanics of Model Membranes by Atomic Force Microscopy and Spectroscopy: Insights into the Role of Cholesterol and Sphingolipids [PDF]
Biological membranes mediate several biological processes that are directly associated with their physical properties but sometimes difficult to evaluate.

Acute kidney injury induced by protein-overload nephropathy down-regulates gene expression of hepatic cerebroside sulfotransferase in mice, resulting in reduction of liver and serum sulfatides [PDF]
Sulfatides, possible antithrombotic factors belonging to sphingoglycolipids, are widely distributed in mammalian tissues and serum. We recently found that the level of serum sulfatides was significantly lower in hemodialysis patients than that in normal ...

Brain region-specific amyloid plaque-associated myelin lipid loss, APOE deposition and disruption of the myelin sheath in familial Alzheimer\u27s disease mice [PDF]
There is emerging evidence that amyloid beta (A beta) aggregates forming neuritic plaques lead to impairment of the lipid-rich myelin sheath and glia.

Structural characterization of cationic DODAB bilayers containing C24:1 β-glucosylceramide [PDF]
The effect of 5 mol%, 9 mol%, and 16 mol% of C24:1 β-glucosylceramide (βGlcCer) on the structure of cationic DODAB bilayers was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electron spin resonance (ESR ...

Anti-Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HepG2) activities of Monoterpene Hydroxy Lactones isolated from the Marine Microalga Tisochrysis Lutea [PDF]
Tisochrysis lutea is a marine haptophyte rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (e.g., docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) and carotenoids (e.g., fucoxanthin).

CLN3p Impacts Galactosylceramide Transport, Raft Morphology, and Lipid Content [PDF]
Juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL) belongs to the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses characterized by blindness/seizures/motor/cognitive decline and early death. JNCL is caused by CLN3 gene mutations that negatively modulate cell growth/apoptosis.

Efficient divergent synthesis of new immunostimulant 4″-modified α-galactosylceramide analogues [PDF]
A synthesis strategy for the swift generation of 4"-modified alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GalCer) analogues is described, establishing a chemical platform to comprehensively investigate the structure activity relationships (SAR) of this understudied ...

Synthesis of Galactosylceramide and Glucosylceramide by Mouse Kidney Preparations
A particulate fraction was prepared from kidneys, lyophilized, and coated with ceramide. After incubation with UDP-[14C]Gal and appropriate cofactors, the major radioactive component in the lipid fraction was galactosylceramide (Gal-Cer). If UDP-Glc was substituted for UDP-Gal, the product was glucosylceramide (Glc-Cer).

Lipid conformation in model membranes and biological membranes [PDF]
Protein molecules in solution or in protein crystals are characterized by rather well-defined structures in which α-helical regions, β-pleated sheets, etc., are the key features. Likewise, the double helix of nucleic acids has almost become the trademark
