Galectin-1 and HIV-1 Infection
2010Initial binding of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) to its susceptible CD4(+) cells is the limiting step for the establishment of infection as the avidity of viral envelope gp120 for CD4 is not high and the number of viral envelope spikes on the surface is found to be low compared to highly infectious viruses. Several host factors, such as C-type

Galectin-1 binds mucin in human trophoblast
Histochemistry and Cell Biology, 2014Mucins are multifunctional highly glycosylated proteins expressed by the female reproductive tract. Differential expression of MUC1 and MUC15 has been shown in trophoblast. This study was undertaken to establish the distribution of mucin(s) in cytotrophoblast cell cultures using anti-bovine submaxillary mucin (BSM) and to investigate the possibility of

Galectin-1 and immunotherapy for brain cancer
Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics, 2011The prognosis of patients diagnosed with high-grade glioma continues to be dismal in spite of multimodal treatment. Active specific immunotherapy by means of dendritic cell vaccination is considered to be a new promising concept that aims at generating an anti-tumoral immune response.

Galectin‐1 studies in proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Acta Ophthalmologica, 2019AbstractPurposeGalectin‐1 regulates endothelial cell function and promotes angiogenesis. We investigated the hypothesis that galectin‐1 may be involved in the pathogenesis of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).MethodsVitreous samples from 36 PDR and 20 nondiabetic patients, epiretinal fibrovascular membranes from 13 patients with PDR, rat retinas

Galectin-1 and Immune Suppression during Radiotherapy
Clinical Cancer Research, 2014Abstract Radiotherapy induces galectin-1 (Gal-1) secretion by tumors, which induces CD8+ T-cell apoptosis and lymphopenia. These effects are substantially decreased by Gal-1 shRNA. Inhibition of Gal-1 may be an effective strategy for overcoming radiation-induced lymphopenia, which may improve clinical outcomes.

Galectin-1 in Stable Liver Transplant Recipients
Transplantation Proceedings, 2015The achievement of a state of tolerance and minimization of the immunosuppressive load form part of the "Holy Grail" in solid organ transplantation. Galectin-1 recently has been described to be involved in the maintenance of a tolerant environment, but there is no evidence of its role in human liver transplantation.

Intracellular Glycoproteins Binding Galectin-1 in Thyroid Lesions
Tumori Journal, 2009Aims and background The increased expression of galectin-1 on the mRNA and protein level observed in malignant thyroid tumors in comparison with benign lesions suggests that this protein may be associated with malignant transformation of thyroid epithelium.

The immunological potential of galectin-1 and -3
Autoimmunity Reviews, 2009A family of beta-galactosides-binding proteins, called galectins, have recently emerged as novel molecules with immunoregulatory functions. These proteins are expressed in both inflammatory and non-inflammatory cells including monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, mast cells, and B and T cells, giving a broad spectrum of involvement in the immune ...

Current Drug Targets, 2005
Recently, we discovered oxidized galectin-1 as a factor that regulates initial axonal growth in the peripheral nerve after axotomy. Galectin-1 is a member of the galectins, a family of animal lectins ranging from Caenorhabditis elegans to humans, which is defined by their affinity for beta-galactosides and by significant sequence similarity in the ...

AbstractThe diabetic milieu is believed to change the activity, or result in damage of podocytes—a key component of the glomerular filtration barrier and known to secrete matrix for glomerular basement membrane. This in turn contributes to diabetic nephropathy.
