A guide to the types, structures, and multifaceted functions of matrix metalloproteinases in cancer

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) orchestrate cancer progression and metastasis through proteolytic and non‐proteolytic actions. By remodeling the tumor microenvironment, enhancing growth factor availability, and modulating cell behavior, MMPs promote proliferation, migration or invasion, and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition. Alongside extracellular

Foreign body responses in central nervous system mimic natural wound responses and alter biomaterial functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Biomaterials hold promise for diverse therapeutic applications in the central nervous system (CNS). Little is known about molecular factors that determine CNS foreign body responses (FBRs) in vivo , or about how such responses influence biomaterial ...

Disruption of iron metabolism resulting from Dmt1/Slc11a2 deficiency compromises Notch protein degradation and transcriptional activation

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Divalent metal transporter 1 (Dmt1) maintains iron homeostasis and lysosomal proteostasis required for physiological Notch receptor–ligand signaling. Dmt1 loss lowers iron storage capacity (ferritin), increasing intracellular Fe2+, driving ROS and lipid peroxidation, and leading to lysosomal/mitochondrial dysfunction.

Galectin-3 inhibition reduces fibrotic scarring and promotes functional recovery after spinal cord injury in mice

open access: yesCell & Bioscience
Background In the context of spinal cord injury (SCI), infiltrating macrophages assume prominence as the primary inflammatory cells within the lesion core, where the fibrotic scar is predominantly orchestrated by platelet-derived growth factor receptor ...

Early‐Onset Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Emerging Biological Insights, Risk Factors and Clinical Implications

open access: yesJournal of Oral Pathology &Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Early‐onset oral squamous cell carcinoma (EO‐OSCC), commonly defined as occurring in individuals under 50 years of age, is increasingly recognized as a potentially distinct clinical subset with differences in exposure patterns and tumor biology compared with conventional oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Mediating effect of vascular calcification in galectin-3-related mortality in hemodialysis patients

open access: yesScientific Reports
Galectin-3 levels have been studied as a potential biomarker for predicting cardiovascular (CV) risk and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Recently, a close relationship between galectin-3 and vascular calcification (VC) has been reported.

Influence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea on Maternal and Perinatal Outcomes in Patients With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases during pregnancy and is associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), although its clinical impact on birth outcomes remains unclear. We aimed to assess the effect of several OSA criteria and intermittent hypoxia in the third trimester on perinatal outcomes in women with GDM.
