Instructional design as game design
Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Foundations of Digital Games, 2009Games have made their way into the classroom in a multitude of ways to attract and retain students. The academic community has made great strides incorporating games into academic study. Although some have suggested formal links, little work has been done on formalizing how game design can inform instructional design.

Designing Educational Games by Combining Other Game Designs
2012 IEEE 12th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2012The complexity and sophistication of computer games is growing every day, not only in terms of graphical resources and advanced interaction mechanisms but also with regards to their narratives and their rules. In this paper we propose to tackle the complexity related to the rules and narratives of a game design by describing it through combinations of ...

In this paper, notions of game studies, games research, game design, and design research are examined. As a most popular keyword on game research papers 'game design' connects the interdiscipline of game studies. However, it is typical that notions of 'design' and 'design research' are not explicitly reflected on the research papers within the academic

Design Games for In-Situ Design
International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction, 2013The mobile culture has spawned a host of context-based products, like location-based and tag-based applications. This presents a new challenge for the designer. There is a need of design methods that acknowledge the context and allows it to influence the design ideas. This article focuses on a design problem where an in-situ design practice may further

In this paper, we define and begin the study of an extensive family of simple n-person games based in a natural way on block designs, and hitherto for the most part unexplored except for the finite projective games (13). They should serve at least as a proving ground for conjectures about simple games.

In this article, the notion of game design value is proposed and explored utilizing three design theory frameworks: Holm's design values, Lawson's guiding principles and Schon's appreciative systems. Game design, as other design fields, is affected by the designers' personal attitudes, beliefs and values.

This paper discusses the course 'Gameful Design' held as part of the computer science master curriculum at Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). We argue that the challenge of meaningfully teaching serious game design and gamification design is not solved by solely imparting design guidelines.

On the design of lottery games
Journal of the Operational Research Society, 2003Summary: We describe a model of participation in lottery games designed to address the optimisation of tax revenue in state-sponsored lotteries. The model treats participants dynamically and examines a long-run equilibrium. A novel high frequency approximation is used to turn the problem into a static, state-contingent deterministic programming problem.
