Postoperative gastric emptying
Summary Postoperative intolerance of oral fluids is common after abdominal surgery, and their premature administration may result in abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting. The ability of the stomach to empty 100 ml of water was investigated in patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy.

Peroral endoscopic pyloromyotomy accelerates gastric emptying in healthy pigs: proof of concept
Introduction: Gastroparesis, or delayed gastric emptying, can be diagnosed with gastric emptying scintigraphy. Manometric studies of patients with gastroparesis show increased pyloric tone (pylorospasm).

A Fully Resolved Multiphysics Model of Gastric Peristalsis and Bolus Emptying in the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract [PDF]
Over the past few decades, in silico modeling of organ systems has significantly furthered our understanding of their physiology and biomechanical function. In this work, we present a detailed numerical model of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract that not only accounts for the fiber architecture of the muscle walls, but also the multiphasic ...

Gastric emptying and glycemic control pathways are closely interrelated processes. Gastric chyme is transferred into the duodenum with velocities depending on its solid or liquid state, as well as on its caloric and nutritional composition.

Lack of Relationship Between Chronic Upper Abdominal Symptoms and Gastric Function in Functional Dyspepsia [PDF]
To determine the relationship between gastric function and upper abdominal sensations we studied sixty FD patients (43 female). All patients underwent three gastric function tests: 13C octanoic gastric emptying test, three-dimensional ultrasonography ...

Gastric Emptying Scintigraphy [PDF]
In 1966, Griffith et al. used “a standard breakfast of ordinary food” labeled with chromium-51 to report the first use of gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES). As the procedure was refined over the years, investigators realized the importance of the radiotracer binding to the meal to ...

Delayed gastric emptying in nondiabetic patients with end-stage kidney disease
Objective This study aimed to assess the gastric emptying capacity in nondiabetic patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) by ultrasound. Methods Consecutive hemodialysis patients with ESKD (n = 37) and healthy controls (n = 37) were enrolled.

Detecting and measuring human gastric peristalsis using magnetically controlled capsule endoscope [PDF]
Magnetically controlled capsule endoscope (MCCE) is an emerging tool for the diagnosis of gastric diseases with the advantages of comfort, safety, and no anesthesia. In this paper, we develop algorithms to detect and measure human gastric peristalsis (contraction wave) using video sequences acquired by MCCE.

Assessment of the Prevalence of Diabetic Gastroparesis and Validation of Gastric Emptying Scintigraphy for Diagnosis. [PDF]
OBJECTIVE: Gastroparesis is defined as delayed gastric emptying and is a common medical condition in diabetic patients. Scintigraphy is commonly used as a standard diagnostic procedure for the quantitative assessment of gastroparesis.
