Gene-Gene Interaction and Epistasis

2011
This chapter defines the differing meanings of the words gene-gene interaction and “epistasis”. Epistasis can be loosely defined as the interaction between two or more genes. The differences between biological and statistical epistasis are examined and the decomposition of genetic variance in any system into single-locus and epistatic components of ...

Gene function, gene networks and the fate of duplicated genes

Seminars in Cell & Developmental Biology, 1999
For both copies of a duplicated gene to become fixed in a population and subsequently maintained, selection must favour individuals with both genes over individuals with one. Here I review and assess some of the proposed ways that gene structure and function might affect the likelihood of both copies acquiring distinct functions and therefore positive ...

Gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in lipodystrophy

BIOCHIMICA ET BIOPHYSICA ACTA-MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOLOGY OF LIPIDS, 2019
Monogenic lipodystrophies are a heterogeneous group of rare disorders characterized by a lack of adipose tissue (AT), all of which predispose patients to the development of insulin resistance and its related metabolic sequelae. The extent of AT loss ranges from partial, as in familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD), to a total absence of metabolically ...

Sequencing Genes and Gene Islands by Gene Enrichment

2009
Access to the sequence of any gene in a genome greatly accelerates genetics research. Whole genome sequencing is a way to retrieve such information although, for large genomes such as that of maize, it represents a huge effort. Fortunately, a maize genome sequencing project is currently underway but, before this project started, the maize research ...

A Gene-Based Approach for Testing Gene × Gene and Gene × Environment Interactions

2016
The importance of the gene × gene (G × G) and gene × environment (G × E) interaction has been widely recognized. It is statistically challenging to account for interactions in the analysis of genome-wide association data. In this chapter, we introduce a gene-based method for modeling G × G and G × E interactions under the regression framework.
