The rapid induction of the proto-oncogene c- fos by growth factors and other bioactive agents, and the recent evidence that the c- fos protein (Fos) is associated with transcriptional complexes, suggests that Fos may represent an integral part of an intracellular messenger pathway that ...

In contrast to c-jun and junB, the junD gene is constitutively expressed in quiescent cells. The junD promoter, therefore, may provide a paradigm for promoters mostly active in growth arrested cells. We report here that the human junD promoter is repressed by serum and TPA.

Proto-oncogene fos: an inducible multifaceted gene.
Symposium on Fundamental Cancer Research, 1988Proto-oncogene fos, which is expressed during cell growth and cell differentiation and development, is a multifaceted gene. The viral homolog, v-fos, was identified as the resident transforming gene of FBJ-murine osteosarcoma virus, which induces bone tumors in mice. Owing to an in-frame deletion during the biogenesis of the v-fos gene, the products of

The c-fos proto-oncogene is believed to play a pivotal role in transducing growth factor-mediated signals from the extracellular milieu into the nucleus. c-fos protein dimerizes with c-jun and related proteins and mediates transcription via AP-1 sites. Using c-fos-deficient mice generated through gene knockout techniques, we derived 3T3-type cell lines

Fos-transformation activates genes associated with invasion.
Oncogene, 1994Fos oncoproteins transform cells by functioning as transcription factors. Over-expression of c-fos results in minimal morphological transformation while the two viral isolates, FBJ and FBR v-fos, result in full morphological transformation. Fos-transformed cells are serum dependent for proliferation but not for morphological transformation. To identify

Schizophrenia-associated Risk and Protective Variants of c-Fos Encoding Gene
Recent Advances in DNA & Gene Sequences (Formerly Recent Patents on DNA & Gene Sequences), 2016Defects in synaptic plasticity play a key role in pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Pathomechanisms responsible for synaptic plasticity alterations in schizophrenia are very complicated and not well defined. Transcription factor c-Fos plays an important role in regulation of synaptic plasticity.

Functional Association of Immediate Early Gene c-fos with Nuclear Matrix
Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2003Accumulation of c-fos gene locus DNA in the nuclear matrix of hepatocyte nuclei was observed during induction of c-fos with cycloheximide. No enhanced association with the nuclear matrix was detected for inactive immunoglobulin gene locus. The use of endogenous DNAses allows isolation of nuclear matrix preparations enriched with transcribing chromatin.
