The origin of the genetic code
Journal of Molecular Biology, 1968Abstract The general features of the genetic code are described. It is considered that originally only a few amino acids were coded, but that most of the possible codons were fairly soon brought into use. In subsequent steps additional amino acids were substituted when they were able to confer a selective advantage, until eventually the code became ...

The Science of Nature, 1973
The origin of the genetic code is not merely an evolutionary juggling of codon assignments until some optimal configuration is achieved. It is, rather, the more interesting and profound problem of how codon assignments arose. This is part and parcel of the origin of a translating mechanism.

Origins of life and evolution of the biosphere, 1990
Recent findings on the genetic code are reviewed, including selenocysteine usage, deviations in the assignments of sense and nonsense codons, RNA editing, natural ribosomal frameshifts and non-orthodox codon-anticodon pairings. A multi-stage codon reading process is presented.
