Abstract This chapter covers the EU’s regulatory system on genetically modified (GM) food. It outlines the legal framework, its foundation, objectives and primary goals (sections 8.2 and 8.2.1), as well as the scope (section 8.2.2), and main requirements (section 8.3) of the GMO deliberate release and GM food and feed framework.

Genetically modified foods have been a major growth area in biotechnology. In 2005, 21 nations raised biotech crops on a commercial basis, up from 17 the previous year. Around 90 percent of Australian cotton and 80 percent of American soybeans currently are based on altered crops.
