The limits of mean-field heterozygosity estimates under spatial extension in simulated plant populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Computational models of evolutionary processes are increasingly required to incorporate multiple and diverse sources of data. A popular feature to include in population genetics models is spatial extension, which reflects more accurately natural ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Little evidence of inbreeding depression for birth mass, survival and growth in Antarctic fur seal pups

open access: yesScientific Reports
Inbreeding depression, the loss of offspring fitness due to consanguineous mating, is generally detrimental for individual performance and population viability.

Population genetics of translational robustness

open access: yes, 2006
Recent work has shown that expression level is the main predictor of a gene’s evolutionary rate, and that more highly expressed genes evolve slower.

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Landscape genetics and gene flow in the banana pathogenic fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Among the different evolutionary forces driving population genetics, gene flow related to dispersal plays a major role in local adaptation processes. However very few studies on plant pathogenic fungi focussed on deciphering gene flow patterns at the ...

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, Population III, and Stellar Genetics in the Galactic Halo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Original article can be found at: http://www.publish.csiro.au --Copyright CSIRO --DOI : 10.1071/AS01067The diverse isotopic and elemental signatures produced in different nucle- osynthetic sites are passed on to successive generations of stars.

Photosynthesis under far‐red light—evolutionary adaptations and bioengineering of light‐harvesting complexes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phototrophs evolved light‐harvesting systems adapted for efficient photon capture in habitats enriched in far‐red radiation. A subset of eukaryotic pigment‐binding proteins can absorb far‐red photons via low‐energy chlorophyll states known as red forms.

gPGA: GPU Accelerated Population Genetics Analyses. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The isolation with migration (IM) model is important for studies in population genetics and phylogeography. IM program applies the IM model to genetic data drawn from a pair of closely related populations or species based on Markov chain Monte Carlo ...

The role of fibroblast growth factors in cell and cancer metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling regulates crucial signaling cascades that promote cell proliferation, survival, and metabolism. Therefore, FGFs and their receptors are often dysregulated in human diseases, including cancer, to sustain proliferation and rewire metabolism.
