Advances in plant male sterility for hybrid seed production: an overview of conditional nuclear male sterile lines and biotechnology-based male sterile systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Male sterility forms the foundation of hybrid seed production technology in field crops. A variety of genetically controlled male sterility/fertility systems starting with cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), genic male sterility (GMS) including conditional

Breeding dominant genic male sterility restorer line of Brassica napus L.

open access: yesOil Crop Science, 2020
To facilate breeding process of Brassica napus, a microspore culture and molecular marker-assisted screening combined system were proposed in this research. At early flowering stage, F1 offspring of hybridized combination HY15A × HF06 was used as donor

Male sterile 44 confers dominant male sterility in maize by disrupting lipid metabolism pathways

open access: yesIndustrial Crops and Products
Dominant genic male sterility (DGMS) is a valuable trait for harnessing heterosis in hybrid breeding of industrial crops, yet its underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Genome-wide analyses on transcription factors and their potential microRNA regulators involved in maize male fertility

open access: yesCrop Journal, 2021
Anther development is a programmed biological process crucial to plant male reproduction. Genome-wide analyses on the functions of transcriptional factor (TF) genes and their microRNA (miRNA) regulators contributing to anther development have not been ...

Tracking the expression of photosensitive genic male sterility genes in rice

open access: yes, 2016
Photoperiod sensitive genic male sterile rice lines contain genes that induce complete sterility in high temperature and long day light length period, and revert to fertility in optimum low temperature and short day light length period.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 20, Issue 6, Page 1626-1642, June 2026.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Use of CRISPR/Cas9-Based Gene Editing to Simultaneously Mutate Multiple Homologous Genes Required for Pollen Development and Male Fertility in Maize

open access: yesCells, 2022
Male sterility represents an important trait for hybrid breeding and seed production in crops. Although the genes required for male fertility have been widely studied and characterized in many plant species, most of them are single genic male-sterility ...

Molecular tagging of a genic male-sterile gene in rice

open access: yesChinese Science Bulletin, 2001
The sterility of Pingxiang male-sterile rice (Pms), possibly derided from a spontaneous mutation in Pingxiang fertile rice (Pmf), was previously reported to be controlled by a single dominant nuclear gene. It can be restored to fertility either by a dominant epistatic gene or by higher temperature treatment at the early stage of inflorescence ...
