Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of small colony variants and their role in chronic infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Small colony variant (SCV) bacteria arise spontaneously within apparently homogeneous microbial populations, largely in response to environmental stresses, such as antimicrobial treatment.

Finding novel vulnerabilities of hypomorphic BRCA1 alleles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Synthetic lethality screens performed to identify novel vulnerabilities often model complete gene loss, thereby overlooking patient‐derived hypomorphic mutations. In this study, we have performed genome‐wide CRISPR screens on BRCA1 hypomorphic mutations, showing BRCA1I26A behaves like wild‐type, while BRCA1R1699Q mimics deficiency. Furthermore, we have

Multilocus genotypic analysis of Cryptosporidium parvum isolates from different hosts and geographical origins.

open access: yes, 1998
The genetic analysis of oocysts recovered from the stools of humans and animals infected with Cryptosporidium parvum has consistently shown the existence of two distinct genotypes.

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Egg-laying ChickenGTEx resource deciphers context-specific regulatory effects on fertility traits

open access: yesNature Communications
Characterization of the genetic and molecular architecture underlying egg production traits in chickens is essential for improving the rate of genetic gain through intensive artificial selection.

In vitro and in silico modelling of ROS1‐positive non‐small cell lung cancer reveals fusion‐dependent tyrosine kinase inhibitor responses

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Drug resistance limits treatment success in a subset of lung cancers driven by ROS1 gene alterations. Using patient‐derived cells and computer simulations, we studied three key mutations and how they affect five targeted drugs. The mutations reduced drug effectiveness in different ways by altering protein structure and behavior.

Identification of invasive filamentous mold isolates using DNA sequencing: Experience of a clinical laboratory in a resource-limited setting

open access: yesBiomedical and Biotechnology Research Journal
Background: Correct identification of clinically significant mold is becoming critical and cannot be relied only on phenotypic methods; hence, there is a dire need to develop an algorithm of workflows and capacity for molecular identification. This study
