Glucocorticoids are the most effective anti-inflammatory treatment for allergic diseases, and inhaled glucocorticoids have now become the first-line treatment for asthma. Glucocorticoids were discovered in the 1940s as extracts of the adrenal cortex and this was followed by the isolation of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from pituitary gland ...

Since the last meta-analysis in 1989, a number of randomised trials on the benefit of glucocorticoids have been published, resulting in an increasing interest in the use of glucocorticoids to treat outpatients with croup. The objective of this review was to provide evidence to guide clinicians in their treatment of patients with croup, to examine the ...

Systemic Absorption and Side Effects of Locally Injected Glucocorticoids
PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation, 2019Local glucocorticoid injections are often used to treat joint, soft tissue, or spinal pain, but the systemic side effects associated with these injections are poorly understood and not well recognized.

Macrophages and the glucocorticoids
Journal of Neuroimmunology, 1992Macrophages fulfill such functions as (i) housekeeping and scavenging, (ii) protective and defense, and (iii) memory. Glucocorticoids are hormones also used as anti-inflammatory and immuno-suppressive drugs. They act on the many functions of macrophages, mainly by interfering with functions (ii) and (iii).

Glucocorticoids and depression
Best Practice & Research Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1999Depression has been associated with impaired mineralocorticoid receptor function, restrained glucocorticoid receptor feedback at the level of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, raised cortisol level and increased corticotropin-releasing factor activity, which may act in concert to induce the signs and symptoms of the disorder.

Postmenopausal women are at greatest risk of rapid bone loss and fracture with glucocorticoids and should be actively considered for prophylactic measures. In men and premenopausal women receiving glucocorticoids, the decision to use anti-osteoporosis prophylaxis is less clear and depends upon baseline bone mineral density [BMD], anticipated dose and ...

Biochemical Pharmacology, 2002
Glucocorticoids are the most effective anti-inflammatory agents known. However, the use of these powerful molecules is plagued by a host of serious, sometimes life-threatening side-effects. The search for new compounds that maintain the efficacy of the steroids without some of the side-effects has entered a new phase.

Glucocorticoid hormones are secreted uniquely from the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex, with marked circadian variation in basal levels and acute elevation in response to stress. Glucocorticoid receptors are almost ubiquitously distributed, and mediate a wide range of tissue-specific responses; in addition to classical, [3H]dexamethasone-binding

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2011
Since the initial publication of this systematic review in 1997, several randomized trials examining the benefit of glucocorticoids have been published. The objective of this review is to provide evidence to guide clinicians in their treatment of patients with croup by determining the effectiveness of glucocorticoids and to identify areas requiring ...
