Contrasting functional responses of benthic and hyporheic stream biofilms to light availability and macronutrient stoichiometry

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Nutrient dynamics in headwater streams are governed by benthic and hyporheic biofilms, with carbon (C) : nitrogen (N) : phosphorus (P) ratios driving the heterotrophic microbial biofilm development through nutrient limitation. Furthermore, heterotrophic responses to changes in C : N : P ratios are probably modulated by autotrophic responses to

Glucan Phosphorylase‐Catalyzed Enzymatic Synthesis of a New Unnatural Heteroaminopolysaccharide, Glucosamino‐2‐deoxyglucan, and Its N‐Benzylation for pH Responsive Property

open access: yesMacromolecular Chemistry and Physics, EarlyView.
A new unnatural heteroaminopolysaccahride, that is, α(1→$1{\to} $4)‐linked glucosamino‐2‐deoxyglucan, is successfully synthesized by thermostable glucan phosphorylase (from Aquifex aeolicus VF5)‐catalyzed enzymatic copolymerization of α‐d‐glucosamine 1‐phosphate/‐glucal as comonomers from maltotriose as a primer.

In Situ Gels for Nasal Delivery: Formulation, Characterization and Applications

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, EarlyView.
Drug delivery through the nasal route offers many advantages, but is hampered by a number of challenges, such as the short drug retention time caused by mucociliary clearance. In situ forming gels, which undergo a sol‐to‐gel transition with specific triggers at the site of action, present real opportunities in this field.

Multifunctional Chitosan–Covalent Bonded Multi‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes Composite Binder for Enhanced Electrochemical Performances of Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
A multifunctional aqueous composite binder is developed for Li–S batteries by using catechol‐conjugated chitosan covalent bonded with multi‐wall carbon nanotubes. The strong polysulfide adsorption and improved mechanical properties lead to crack‐free electrodes and improved adhesion.

Efficient Production and Isolation of 3‐Acetamido‐5‐Acetylfuran from N‐Acetyl‐D‐Glucosamine within Protic Ionic Liquids

open access: yesChemistryOpen, EarlyView.
This paper presents a facile method for the conversion of N‐acetylglucosamine (NAG) to 3‐acetamido‐5‐acetylfuran (3A5AF), a potential platform chemical, within protic ionic liquid systems. Reaction optimization, 3A5AF isolation, green metrics and the recyclability and scalability of selected systems are discussed.
