Regulation of Retroviral and SARS-CoV-2 Protease Dimerization and Activity through Reversible Oxidation

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2022
Most viruses encode their own proteases to carry out viral maturation and these often require dimerization for activity. Studies on human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), type 2 (HIV-2) and human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-1) proteases have shown ...

Characterization of a monothiol glutaredoxin encoded by Chlorella virus PBCV-1

open access: yesVirus Genes, 2009
Annotation of the 330-kb Chlorella virus PBCV-1 genome identified a 237 nucleotide gene (a438l) that codes for a protein with approximately 35% amino acid identity to glutaredoxins (Grx) found in other organisms. The PBCV-1 protein resembles classical Grxs in both size (9 kDa) and location of the active site (N-terminus).

Upregulation of Glutaredoxin-1 Activates Microglia and Promotes Neurodegeneration: Implications for Parkinson's Disease. [PDF]

open access: yesAntioxid Redox Signal, 2016
Aims: Neuroinflammation and redox dysfunction are recognized factors in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis, and diabetes is implicated as a potentially predisposing condition. Remarkably, upregulation of glutaredoxin-1 (Grx1) is implicated in regulation of inflammatory responses in various disease contexts ...

Protein Glutathionylation and Glutaredoxin: Role in Neurodegenerative Diseases

open access: yes, 2022
Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of many neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Harnessing Methylselenol (CH3SeH): A Highly Effective Platform for Stimuli‐Responsive Delivery With Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tools for controlled selenol delivery are crucial for exploring Se‐related biology and medicine, but compound platforms for triggerable release of CH3SeH remain lacking. Herein, we report the first general triggered platform (TD‐MSe) for efficient cyclization release of CH3SeH in live cells.

Glutaredoxine reduzieren schnell Glutathionhydroper‐ und Glutathionpolysulfide

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.

Thioredoxin-1 distinctly promotes NF-κB target DNA binding and NLRP3 inflammasome activation independently of Txnip

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Antioxidant systems, such as the thioredoxin-1 (Trx1) pathway, ensure cellular redox homeostasis. However, how such systems regulate development and function of myeloid cells is barely understood.

Glutaredoxins Rapidly Reduce Glutathione Hydroper‐ and Polysulfides

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Glutaredoxins (Grx) rapidly reduce glutathione polysulfides (GSSnSG) to glutathione hydroper/polysulfides (GSSnH) or GSSnH to hydrogen (poly)sulfides (H2Sn). Reduction of glutathionylated glutaredoxins by reduced glutathione (GSH) yields glutathione disulfide (GSSG).

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate enhances key enzymatic activities of hepatic thioredoxin and glutathione systems in selenium-optimal mice but activates hepatic Nrf2 responses in selenium-deficient mice

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2016
Selenium participates in the antioxidant defense mainly through a class of selenoproteins, including thioredoxin reductase. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant and biologically active catechin in green tea.
