Novel role for thioredoxin reductase-2 in mitochondrial redox adaptations to obesogenic diet and exercise in heart and skeletal muscle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Increased fatty acid availability and oxidative stress are physiological consequences of exercise (Ex) and a high-fat, high-sugar (HFHS) diet. Despite these similarities, the global effects of Ex are beneficial, whereas HFHS diets are largely deleterious

Inhibition of SLC11A1‐Mediated Lysosomal Iron Accumulation in Microglia Promotes Repair Following White Matter Stroke

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Genetic and pharmacological inhibition of SLC11A1 functioning as an H+/Fe2+ antiporter–mediated lysosomal iron accumulation in microglia promotes lysosomal lumen acidification, increases CTSD expression, enhances lysosomal myelin debris uptake and degradation, and promotes repair following white matter stroke. ABSTRACT White matter stroke (WMS) results

MMP9 drives ferroptosis by regulating GPX4 and iron signaling

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Ferroptosis, defined by the suppression of glutathione peroxidase-4 (GPX4) and iron overload, is a distinctive form of regulated cell death.

Activation of Glutathione Peroxidase 4 as a Novel Anti-inflammatory Strategy

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2018
The anti-oxidative enzyme, glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), helps to promote inflammation resolution by eliminating oxidative species produced by the arachidonic acid (AA) metabolic network.

Palmitoylation‐Mediated Ubiquitination of SRPK1 Regulates Ferroptosis in High‐Fat‐Induced Erectile Dysfunction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Elevated exogenous palmitic acid promotes the S‐palmitoylation of SRPK1 in endothelial cells, a dynamic process governed by ZDHHC24 and APT1. This post‐translational modification strengthens the interaction between SRPK1 and the E3 ubiquitin ligase MIB1, thereby facilitating the proteasomal degradation of SRPK1.

Selenium toxicity but not deficient or super-nutritional selenium status vastly alters the transcriptome in rodents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background Protein and mRNA levels for several selenoproteins, such as glutathione peroxidase-1 (Gpx1), are down-regulated dramatically by selenium (Se) deficiency.

NIR‐Activatable Domino Cascade Catalysis Nanozyme Reactor for Multi‐Mechanism Synergistic Immunotherapy in Bladder Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents an intravesical delivery strategy of ferroptosis‐ and immunity‐inducing nanozyme‐loaded thermoresponsive hydrogels (FMCC@PNH) for enhanced bladder cancer therapy. Abstract Current intravesical therapies for bladder cancer after resection are limited by poor tissue penetration, off‐target effects, and insufficient efficacy.

Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential of GPX4 in Pain Modulation

open access: yesPain and Therapy
Pain, a complex symptom encompassing both sensory and emotional dimensions, constitutes a significant global public health issue. Oxidative stress is a pivotal factor in the complex pathophysiology of pain, with glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) recognized

Biomarkers of selenium status in dogs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Inadequate dietary selenium (Se) intake in humans and animals can lead to long term health problems, such as cancer. In view of the owner's desire for healthy longevity of companion animals, the impact of dietary Se provision on long term ...
