Glycerophospholipid metabolism: Back to the future

Thrombosis Research, 1992
It has become customary to regard the various glycerophospholipids as quite similar, and the acyl groups are considered to have little influence on the behaviour of the lipids in membranes or metabolism. Nevertheless, a number of recent observations by the authors and others indicate a high degree of metabolic compartmentation and substrate specificity

Metabolic turnover of myelin glycerophospholipids

Neurochemical Research, 1994
The apparent half life for metabolic turnover of glycerophospholipids in the myelin sheath, as determined by measuring the rate of loss of label in a myelin glycerophospholipid following radioactive precursor injection, varies with the radioactive precursor used, age of animal, and time after injection during which metabolic turnover is studied ...

Molecular species of choline glycerophospholipids and ethanolamine glycerophospholipids in goat liver

Food Chemistry, 1989
Abstract Twelve and fifteen molecular species were detected in the three subclasses of choline glycerophospholipids (CGP) and ethanolamine glycerophospholipids (EGP), respectively. In the alkenylacyl glycerophosphocholine (GPC), 16:0–18:2 (17·5%) was the major species followed by 18:0–18:2 (13·7%), 18:1–18:1 (12·3%) and 16:0–20:4 (12·2%).

Glycerophospholipid synthesis and functions in Pseudomonas

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 2015
The genus Pseudomonas is one of the most heterogeneous groups of eubacteria, presents in all major natural environments and in wide range of associations with plants and animals. The wide distribution of these bacteria is due to the use of specific mechanisms to adapt to environmental modifications.

Glycerophospholipids and glycerophospholipid-derived lipid mediators: A complex meshwork in Alzheimer’s disease pathology

Progress in Lipid Research, 2011
An increasing body of evidence suggested that intracellular lipid metabolism is dramatically perturbed in various cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases with genetic and lifestyle components (e.g., dietary factors). Therefore, a lipidomic approach was also developed to suggest possible mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Metabolic labeling of glycerophospholipids

The approach of metabolic labeling provides an invaluable tool for elucidating previously unknown and poorly understood metabolic processes within cells. By introducing clickable versions of substrates into cells, the products of these biomolecule mimics can be conveniently tracked via post-derivatization of the clickable tag with a variety of reporter

Glycerophospholipids

2014
Glycerophospholipids are phosphodiesters of glycerol and an alcohol referred to as the polar headgroup. The two glycerol carbinol groups are typically esterified with long chain fatty acyl groups which impart hydrophobic character to these otherwise polar molecules.

Adaptive regulation of glycerophospholipid metabolism

Journal of Cell Science
ABSTRACT Lipid membranes form the essential barriers that compartmentalize life, separating intracellular processes from the external environment. To maintain cellular function and viability, both the plasma membrane and internal organelle membranes undergo continuous compositional and functional remodeling in response to ...

Role of Glycerophospholipid Metabolism in Epilepsy

Current Neuropharmacology
Abstract: Epilepsy is a prevalent and severe neurological condition characterized by recurring seizures. It impacts over 70 million individuals worldwide, posing a substantial challenge to public health and placing a heavy burden on society. Glycerophospholipids are an essential component of neuronal cell membranes.

Mechanisms of glycerophospholipid homeostasis in mammalian cells

Progress in Lipid Research, 2011
The membranes of mammalian cells contain hundreds of different phospholipid species, a variety of glycolipids and cholesterol. While the reasons for such compositional diversity are not well established, they probably relate to a multitude of membrane-associated functions each of which sets specific requirements for the chemical and physical properties
