A glycine-specific N-degron pathway mediates the quality control of protein N-myristoylation

open access: yesScience, 2019
Glycine N-degron regulation revealed For more than 30 years, N-terminal sequences have been known to influence protein stability, but additional features of these N-end rule, or N-degron, pathways continue to be uncovered. Timms et al.

Early Actions of Neurotransmitters During Cortex Development and Maturation of Reprogrammed Neurons

open access: yesFrontiers in Synaptic Neuroscience, 2019
The development of the brain is shaped by a myriad of factors among which neurotransmitters play remarkable roles before and during the formation and maturation of synaptic circuits.

Glycine, serine and threonine metabolism confounds efficacy of complement-mediated killing

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Serum resistance is a poorly understood but common trait of some difficult-to-treat pathogenic strains of bacteria. Here, we report that glycine, serine and threonine catabolic pathway is down-regulated in serum-resistant Escherichia coli, whereas ...

A synthetic BBB-permeable tripeptide GCF confers neuroprotection by increasing glycine in the ischemic brain

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2022
Background: We and others have previously demonstrated that glycine is neuroprotective in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. But glycine has low permeability to the blood–brain barrier (BBB).

Capacitance measurement of dendritic exocytosis in an electrically coupled inhibitory retinal interneuron: an experimental and computational study

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2019
Exocytotic release of neurotransmitter can be quantified by electrophysiological recording from postsynaptic neurons. Alternatively, fusion of synaptic vesicles with the cell membrane can be measured as increased capacitance by recording directly from a ...

Investigating the impact of reactions of C and CH with molecular hydrogen on a glycine gas-grain network [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The impact of including the reactions of C and CH with molecular hydrogen in a gas-grain network is assessed via a sensitivity analysis. To this end, we vary 3 parameters, namely, the efficiency for the reaction \ce{C + H2 -> CH2}, and the cosmic ray ionisation rate, with the third parameter being the final density of the collapsing dark cloud.

Methanol extract of Nigella sativa seed induces changes in the levels of neurotransmitter amino acids in male rat brain regions

open access: yesPharmaceutical Biology, 2017
Context: Nigella sativa L. (Ranunculaceae) (NS) has been used for medicinal and culinary purposes. Different parts of the plant are used to treat many disorders.

mTORC1 amplifies the ATF4-dependent de novo serine-glycine pathway to supply glycine during TGF-β1–induced collagen biosynthesis

open access: yesScience Signaling, 2019
Through mTORC1 signaling, TGF-β1 stimulates glycine synthesis from glucose to support collagen production in lung fibroblasts. Glucose supports fibrosis Transforming growth factor–β (TGF-β) stimulates fibrosis by promoting the differentiation of ...

1H NMR Based Metabolomics in Human Sepsis and Healthy Serum

open access: yesMetabolites, 2020
Early diagnosis is essential but challenging in severe sepsis. Quantifying and comparing metabolite concentrations in serum has been suggested as a new diagnostic tool.

A three-phase chemical model of hot cores: the formation of glycine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A new chemical model is presented that simulates fully-coupled gas-phase, grain-surface and bulk-ice chemistry in hot cores. Glycine (NH2CH2COOH), the simplest amino acid, and related molecules such as glycinal, propionic acid and propanal, are included in the chemical network.
