APOE regulates the transport of GM1
ABSTRACT Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is responsible for lipid transport, including cholesterol transport and clearance. While the ε4 allele of APOE (APOE4) is associated with a significant genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), no mechanistic understanding of its contribution to AD etiology has been established yet. Monosialoganglioside GM1 in cerebral ischemia.
In vitro studies have shown that monosialoganglioside GM1 reduces excitatory amino acid-related neurotoxicity by limiting the downstream consequences of abusive excitatory amino acid receptor stimulation, while enhancing neuronotrophic factor action in a variety of neuronal cell types.

Astrocytes in cell culture incorporate GM1 ganglioside [PDF]
Ganglioside GM1 3H-labelled at the terminal galactose was added to astrocyte cell cultures. GM1 incorporation was studied in the two typical forms of astrocytes in cell culture of flat and stellate morphology.

Rat erythrocytes contained ganglio-series gangliosides, GM1, fucosyl GM1, and GD1a, in a high concentration. The concentrations of GM1, fucosyl GM1, and GD1a in rat erythrocyte ghosts were 889.0 nmol, 470.6 nmol, and 462.0 nmol per g dry weight, respectively, and the molar ratio of lipid-bound sialic acid, cholesterol and lipid-bound phosphorus was 3.1:
