Natural Product‐Derived Vesicles in Nanotherapeutics

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, Volume 15, Issue 9, September 2026.
Natural product‐derived vesicles (NPVs) are an emerging nature‐based nanotherapeutic that can deliver bioactive metabolites into the target site and induce beneficial mechanisms. A practical, chronological bench‐to‐bedside approach throughout the entire NPV development process is expected to resolve challenges encountered in NPV studies.

The Distribution and Feeding Ecology of Three Marine Invertebrates in a Customary Fisheries Management Area and Implications for Restoration

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 3, September 2026.
Biotic interactions are fundamental to the structuring of marine communities. Predator–prey and competitive interactions can drive species distribution, abundance and mediate individual behaviour. These interactions are especially important to understand in the context of restoration.

Thermal Preference and Performance in the Marine Amphipod Melita inaequistylis

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 3, September 2026.
Climate‐induced warming can impose thermal stress on organisms, impacting their physiology in addition to ecosystem structure and functioning. In most species the response to warming is poorly understood; the majority of thermal physiology research focuses on single performance measures and fails to predict overall functioning with respect to future ...

Not All Children Are the Same: Differences in the Microbiome Assembly During Early Development of Seaweeds. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol
Understanding how early microbiomes assemble is central to explaining the ecology and evolution of host–microbe interactions. Comparing three macroalgal species, we show that hosts differ markedly in how they retain parental bacteria and filter environmental taxa during their early development.

Sea Urchin Removal as a Tool, Not a Solution: Practical Lessons for Kelp Restoration in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
The increasing awareness of the extent of urchin barrens and impacts of sea urchin overgrazing on rocky reefs in Aotearoa New Zealand has led to a rapid increase in the use of sea urchin removal as a tool for kelp forest restoration. Here, we review these restoration projects, focusing on three case studies, with the aim to provide context on what ...

Effects of Acclimation Temperature on Responses of Blackfoot Pāua (Haliotis iris) to Acute Temperature Change, Reduced Salinity and Progressive Hypoxia

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
Effects of acclimation temperature with acute temperature, reduced salinity or lowered dissolved oxygen are significant stressors to physiological and biological responses of adult Pāua. Pāua have a limited ability to acclimate to temperatures above 18 °C.

Transforming Coastal Waste: Algae‐Based Recycled HDPE Composites for Enhanced Sustainability

open access: yesPolymer Engineering &Science, Volume 66, Issue 9, Page 6612-6620, September 2026.
Manufacturing and characterization of composites from beach‐cast algae waste combined with recycled high‐density polyethylene. ABSTRACT Growing environmental concerns are accelerating the development of more sustainable materials. This study successfully created a composite material by combining recycled high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) as the matrix ...

Ethnobotanical insights into the medicinal and food uses of Lamiaceae in the Mediterranean region: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1500-1516, September 2026.
For generations, Mediterranean communities have used Lamiaceae or Labiatae plants like rosemary, thyme or mint to care for their health and to enrich their food. By bringing together dispersed knowledge from across the Mediterranean region, our review revealed the continuing relevance of Lamiaceae while also compiling past uses that may hold future ...
