The Interaction of Insulin and Pituitary Hormone Syndromes

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2021
Pituitary hormone axes modulate glucose metabolism and exert direct or indirect effects on insulin secretion and function. Cortisol and growth hormone are potent insulin-antagonistic hormones.

Laron syndrome: An experience of treatment of two cases

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology Case Reports, 2021
Laron syndrome or growth hormone insensitivity is a rare disease presenting with severe postnatal growth failure. Clinically, in most circumstances, it is indistinguishable from growth hormone deficiency.

Antenatal dexamethasone and the growth hormone–insulin-like growth factor axis [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Reproduction, 2000
Dexamethasone administration has marked effects on the growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor axis (GH-IGF) in animal and human studies. During pregnancy in the rat, it is associated with fetal growth restriction due to inhibition of IGF bioactivity. In the human only repeated dosages have been associated with fetal growth restriction.

Consequences of Postnatally Elevated Insulin-Like Growth Factor-II in Transgenic Mice: Endocrine Changes and Effects on Body and Organ Growth. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II) is an important regulator of embryonic growth and differentiation, but its function in postnatal life is unclear. To address this point, we generated transgenic mice harboring fusion genes in which a human IGF-II

Age-related changes in Serum Growth Hormone, Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 and Somatostatin in System Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2004
Background Systemic lupus erythematosus is an age- and gender-associated autoimmune disorder. Previous studies suggested that defects in the hypothalamic/pituitary axis contributed to systemic lupus erythematosus disease progression which could also ...

Genetic variation of metabolite and hormone concentration in UK Holstein-Friesian calves and the genetic relationship with economically important traits [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The decline of dairy cattle fertility worldwide remains a major concern, with conception rates to first service commonly below 40%. The length and severity of negative energy balance postpartum are unfavorably correlated with fertility, suggesting that ...

Regulation of human fibroblast insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding proteins by IGF-1 and cytokines, mechanisms of action and effects upon IGF bioactivity [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
PhDThe insulin-like growth factors, IGF-I and IGF-II, are ubiquitous polypeptide molecules that have mitogenic and metabolic actions in a wide variety of cell types, and consequently play a major role in mammalian growth and development.

Decrease in adiponectin levels correlates to growth response in growth hormone-treated children

open access: yes, 2009
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Adiponectin is secreted by adipose tissue and circulates in human plasma at high levels. Decreased adiponectin levels are associated with insulin resistance and obesity.

Adult growth hormone deficiency

open access: yesIndian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2011
Adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is being recognized increasingly and has been thought to be associated with premature mortality. Pituitary tumors are the commonest cause for AGHD.

A 24-Hour Study of the Hypothalamo-Pituitary Axes in Huntington's Disease. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Huntington's disease is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterised by motor, cognitive and psychiatric disturbances. Patients exhibit other symptoms including sleep and mood disturbances, muscle atrophy and weight loss which may be linked to ...
