Growth-Plate Modifications After Drilling
Thirty 5-week-old male rats were used to discern the local modifications of the growth plate after drilling. A 1-mm wide drill hole was made on the right femur from the intercondylar notch to the diaphysis crossing the growth plate, with the left femur acting as a sham-operated control.

DIAMETRIC GROWTH OF THE EPIPHYSIAL PLATE
1. Diametric growth and organisation of the epiphysial cartilage plate have been studied by microradiography of human bone and autoradiography of the epiphysial plate in growing rabbits, using sulphur35. These investigations were supplemented by a radiographic study of four patients with dyschondroplasia in whom the progress of the characteristic ...

Growth Plate Chondrocytes: Skeletal Development, Growth and Beyond
Growth plate chondrocytes play central roles in the proper development and growth of endochondral bones. Particularly, a population of chondrocytes in the resting zone expressing parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is now recognized as skeletal ...

Regeneration of the Growth Plate
Cells Tissues Organs, 1989The occurrence of growth plate regeneration has been doubted. However, in 5 different series of experiments reported between 1950 and 1986 regeneration of injured parts of growth plates in long bones of rabbits and pigs could be demonstrated. The 1st series implied partial X-ray injury of growth plates in rabbits aged 3–6 weeks. The 2nd series implied ...

THE BIOLOGY OF THE GROWTH PLATE
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-American Volume, 2003• Chondrocytes in the growth plate undergo a complex series of molecular, biochemical, and morphological changes during the process of differentiation. • Longitudinal growth depends on both proliferation and hypertrophy of chondrocytes in the growth plate.

Reimplantation of growth plate chondrocytes into growth plate defects in sheep
Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 1990AbstractDefects in growth plates due to trauma, infection, or genetic causes can result in bone formation across the defect, bridging the epiphysis and metaphysis, resulting in growth arrest and limb deformation. We have investigated the capacity of implanted chondrocyte cultures to prevent this process.

THE PERIOSTEUM IN GROWTH PLATE FAILURE
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1985To investigate the periosteal contribution to the integrity of the growth plate, the authors subjected the proximal tibias of 110 male and female Sprague-Dawley rats between the ages of 25 and 65 days to axial and perpendicular forces to produce epiphysiolysis by use of a slow-loading technique and a cross-head speed of 10 mm per minute.

The growth plate is an organ composed of cartilage, bone, and fibrous parts whose activities are synchronized to provide for longitudinal growth in the typical long bone. The morphology, function, and metabolism of the growth plate and its component parts are discussed in detail in this article.

The role of estrogen receptor α in growth plate cartilage for longitudinal bone growth
Estrogens enhance skeletal growth during early sexual maturation, whereas high estradiol levels during late puberty result in growth plate fusion in humans.
