Brain H2A.Z: the long and the short [PDF]
The role of histone variants and their specific post-translational modifications (PTMs) in the epigenetic regulation of gene expression is still poorly understood. A paper published by Simonet and colleagues in Epigenetics and Chromatin describes a new H2A.Z subtype that is specific for brain and pituitary in the carp and provides additional ...

Histone variant H2A.Z regulates zygotic genome activation [PDF]
AbstractDuring embryogenesis, the genome shifts from transcriptionally quiescent to extensively active in a process known as Zygotic Genome Activation (ZGA). In Drosophila, the pioneer factor Zelda is known to be essential for the progression of development; still, it regulates the activation of only a small subset of genes at ZGA.

Non‐redundant functions of H2A.Z.1 and H2A.Z.2 in chromosome segregation and cell cycle progression [PDF]
H2A.Z is a H2A-type histone variant essential for many aspects of cell biology, ranging from gene expression to genome stability. From deuterostomes, H2A.Z evolved into two paralogues, H2A.Z.1 and H2A.Z.2, that differ by only three amino acids and are encoded by different genes (H2AFZ and H2AFV, respectively).

Crystal structures of heterotypic nucleosomes containing histones H2A.Z and H2A [PDF]
H2A.Z is incorporated into nucleosomes located around transcription start sites and functions as an epigenetic regulator for the transcription of certain genes.

Comprehensive bioinformatic analysis reveals oncogenic role of H2A.Z isoforms in cervical cancer progression [PDF]
Objective(s): Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most common neoplasia in women worldwide in which epigenetic alterations play an important role. Several studies have reported pro-oncogenic role of the histone variant H2A.Z in different types of cancer;

What makes a histone variant a variant: Changing H2A to become H2A.Z.
Chromatin structure and underlying DNA accessibility is modulated by the incorporation of histone variants. H2A.Z, a variant of the H2A core histone family, plays a distinct and essential role in a diverse set of biological functions including gene ...

H2A.Z: View from the Top [PDF]
For a couple of decades the chromatin field has endured undeserved neglect. Indeed, what could be so exciting about a monotonous repeating structure whose purpose in life was to package DNA? Chromatin glamour is triumphantly back, due to the realization that chromatin is a major player in the regulation of gene expression and other nuclear processes ...

The replacement histone H2A.Z in a hyperacetylated form is a feature of active genes in the chicken [PDF]
The replacement histone H2A.Z is variously reported as being linked to gene expression and preventing the spread of heterochromatin in yeast, or concentrated at heterochromatin in mammals.

H2A.Z-Mediated Genome-Wide Chromatin Specialization [PDF]
The characterization of the involvement of different histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) and histone variants in chromatin structure has represented one of the most recurrent topics in molecular biology during the last decade (since 1996).

H2A.Z Sets the Stage in ESCs [PDF]
ESCs undergo drastic changes in chromatin states during differentiation. Two recent papers in Cell (Li et al., 2012) and Cell Stem Cell (Hu et al., 2013) demonstrate that histone variant H2A.Z plays essential roles in this process by preconfiguring nucleosomes for depletion and recruiting transcription cofactors to cis-regulatory elements.
