Calculation of gamma-ray attenuation parameters for locally developed shielding material: Polyboron

open access: yesJournal of Radiation Research and Applied Sciences, 2016
In the present study, the mass attenuation coefficient (μm) has been calculated analytically for a locally developed shielding material, polyboron, and compared with the values obtained from the WinXCom code, a Windows version of the XCOM database at the

A Workflow to Accelerate Microstructure‐Sensitive Fatigue Life Predictions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a workflow to accelerate predictions of microstructure‐sensitive fatigue life. Results from frameworks with varying levels of simplification are benchmarked against published reference results. The analysis reveals a trade‐off between accuracy and model complexity, offering researchers a practical guide for selecting the optimal ...

Transport of ion beam in an annular magnetically expanding helicon double layer thruster

open access: yes, 2014
An ion beam generated by an annular double layer has been measured in a helicon thruster, which sustains a magnetised low-pressure (5.0 104 Torr) argon plasma at a constant radio-frequency (13.56 MHz) power of 300 W.

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Gamma-ray shielding properties of lanthanum doped barium zirconium titanate ceramic system

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials
With the widespread applications of gamma radiation in the nuclear and medical fields, there has been growing concern about developing high-performance, lightweight, lead-free radiation shields.

The global structure of thin, stratified "alpha"-discs and the reliability of the one layer approximation

open access: yes, 2000
We report the results of a systematic comparison between the vertically averaged model and the vertically explicit model of steady state, Keplerian, optically thick "alpha"-discs.

Investigation of Laser Ablation and Brush Pre‐Treatments for AlCu Cold Roll Bonding in Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Superconductivity in the doped bilayer Hubbard model

open access: yes, 2009
We study by the Gutzwiller approximation the melting of the valence bond crystal phase of a bilayer Hubbard model at sufficiently large inter-layer hopping.

EBSD Study of Creep‐Induced Lattice Misorientation in MgO‐Particle‐Reinforced Austenitic Steel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Creep experiments at 900°C on coarse‐grained steel‐ceramic composites containing recycled magnesia reveal that higher ceramic volume fractions significantly enhance the creep resistance. Detailed EBSD investigations identify subgrain formation in the steel matrix as the dominant deformation mechanism.
