Hyperglycemia as an atypical finding of malignant hyperthermia: A case report and literature review

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, EarlyView.
A 13‐month‐old toddler presented with an atypical symptom – hyperglycemia – during a malignant hyperthermia crisis. During MH, hyperglycemia may result from intracellular calcium leakage in muscle cells, suggesting a potential association between MH susceptibility and hyperglycemia.

Cardiopulmonary effects of sevoflurane, compared with halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane, in dogs.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Veterinary Research, 1997
OBJECTIVE To evaluate cardiopulmonary effects of sevoflurane (Sevo), compared with halothane (Hal), enflurane (Enf), and isoflurane (Iso). ANIMALS 24 healthy Beagles, randomly assigned to 4 groups of 6 dogs each.

Comparison of Bispectral Index Values Produced by Isoflurane and Halothane at Equal End-tidal MAC Concentrations

open access: yesIndian Journal of Anaesthesia, 2007
The bispectral index (BIS) has been validated as a measure of hypnotic effect for various anaesthetic agents. There are limited data correlating the BIS with minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of different volatile anaesthetics.

Utilização de alfentanil, sufentanil e fentanil em cães anestesiados com halotano Use of alfentanil, sufentanil and fentanyl in dogs anesthetized with halothane

open access: yesCiência Rural, 1999
Os analgésicos opióides promovem analgesia intensa, possibilitando o emprego de concentrações reduzidas dos anestésicos inalatórios, minimizando assim a depressão cardiovascular que ocorre durante a anestesia.

Lack of evidence for sprouting of Aβ afferents into the superficial laminas of the spinal cord dorsal horn after nerve section [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The central arborizations of large myelinated cutaneous afferents normally extend as far dorsally as the ventral part of lamina II in rat spinal cord. Woolf et al. (1992) reported that after nerve injury some of these afferents sprouted into lamina I and

Elevated cortisol concentration in preterm sheep fetuses impacts heart development

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The prepartum rise in cortisol promotes cardiac development and maturation. Here, we investigated the impact of elevated circulating cortisol during mid‐late gestation on cardiac growth and metabolism in fetal sheep. Saline or cortisol (2–3 mg in 4.4 mL/24 h) was infused into the fetal jugular vein from 109 to 116 days gestation (dG, term ...

Functional brain imaging during anesthesia in humans: effects of halothane on global and regional cerebral glucose metabolism.

open access: yesAnesthesiology, 1999
BACKGROUND Propofol and isoflurane anesthesia were studied previously with functional brain imaging in humans to begin identifying key brain areas involved with mediating anesthetic-induced unconsciousness.

Halothane Sensitizes the Guinea-Pig Heart to Pharmacological IKr Blockade: Comparison With Urethane Anesthesia

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2005
Potential utility of halothane-anesthetized guinea pigs for detecting drug-induced repolarization delay was analyzed in comparison with urethane-anesthesia (n = 4 for both groups).

Assessment of occupational exposure of medical personnel to inhalatory anesthetics in Poland

open access: yesMedycyna Pracy, 2014
Objectives: Despite common use of inhalatory anesthetics, such as nitrous oxide (N2O), halothane, sevoflurane, and the like, occupational exposure to these substances in operating theatres was not monitored in Poland until 2006.

Molecular genetic analysis for malignant hyperthermia : a thesis presented to Massey University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Biochemistry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare pharmacogenetic disorder in humans caused by inhalational general anaesthetics and depolarising muscle relaxants. An MH reaction shows abnormal calcium homeostasis in skeletal muscle leading to a hypermetabolic state
