Bio-elicitation of β-carboline alkaloids in Cell Suspension Culture of Peganum harmala L.
Background: Sustainable and commercial production of secondary metabolites is a critical issue when dealing with its clinical application. Efforts are still being made to look for biotic or abiotic elicitors with more efficient and universal effects on ...

Harmaline interactions with yeast invertase.
The effect of harmaline, a plant alkaloid has been studied on yeast invertase activity in the absence and presence of 50mM Na+ as a function of pH. Harmaline (1-3 mM) inhibited the invertase activity at pH 5.2, 6.8 and 8 both in the absence (44-92%) and (22-85%) of Na+ ions.

The role of transmembrane sodium gradient in rabbit ileal smooth muscle:utilization of harmaline [PDF]
Decreasing extracellular sodium concentration was found to produce a contractile response of rabbit ileal smooth muscle. As the concentration decreases, the amplitude of contraction increases, thus producing a dose-dependent curve.

The influence of harmaline on the movements of sodium ions in smooth muscle of the guinea pig ileum [PDF]
The effect of changing the extracellular concentration of both Na+ and K+ on the longitudinal muscle of the guinea-pig ileum was studied in the presence and absence of harmaline.
