Synchrony in serum antibody response to conserved proteins of Moraxella catarrhalis in young children

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2020
Conserved Moraxella catarrhalis (Mcat) proteins, oligopeptide permease (Opp)A, hemagglutinin (Hag), outer membrane protein (OMP) CD, Pilin A clade 2 (PilA2), and Moraxella surface protein (Msp) 22 have been studied as vaccine candidates.

Lung organoids as a human system for Mycobacteria infection modeling and drug testing

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial infections, including tuberculosis (TB) and infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), are still public health issues. In 2023, TB caused 1.25 million deaths, while NTM remain a clinical challenge for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).

Autocatalytic Activation of Influenza Hemagglutinin

open access: yesJournal of Molecular Biology, 2006
Enveloped viruses contain surface proteins that mediate fusion between the viral and target cell membranes following an activating stimulus. Acidic pH induces the influenza virus fusion protein hemagglutinin (HA) via irreversible refolding of a trimeric conformational state leading to exposure of hydrophobic fusion peptides on each trimer subunit ...

Protein nanoparticles assemble in plants, display antigenic viral peptides, and produce an epitope‐specific immune response

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Current methods to control porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, a disease affecting pigs, are insufficient and a safer, more effective vaccine is needed. This study describes the design and plant production of a self‐assembling protein nanoparticle vaccine candidate against this disease.

The Effects of Birth Year, Age and Sex on Hemagglutination Inhibition Antibody Responses to Influenza Vaccination

open access: yesVaccines, 2018
The first exposure to influenza is thought to impact subsequent immune responses later in life. The consequences of this can be seen during influenza epidemics and pandemics with differences in morbidity and mortality for different birth cohorts.

Plant‐produced encapsulin displays non‐typhoidal Salmonella enterica antigens and assembles into mosaic nanoparticles

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This study investigates the potential of encapsulin as an antigen display platform for the development of a candidate Salmonella vaccine for poultry. Encapsulin constructs were transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana where they accumulated to high levels.

Influenza A Hemagglutinin Passage Bias Sites and Host Specificity Mutations

open access: yesCells, 2019
Animal studies aimed at understanding influenza virus mutations that change host specificity to adapt to replication in mammalian hosts are necessarily limited in sample numbers due to high cost and safety requirements.
