Cytomegalovirus is associated with depression and anxiety in older adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV), a β-herpesvirus, is common within the population. Although asymptomatic, infection is associated with increased serum concentrations of cytokines such as TNFα and IL-6, which are also related to mood and wellbeing ...

Purification and properties of a plant Agglutinin [PDF]

open access: yes, 1958
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityThis study involved work with extracts of the seeds of Bauhinia purpurea alba, in which an N specific lectin was found by Mäkelä (37) and Boyd and McMaster (16). There were two main purposes in mind.

Viral factors in influenza pandemic risk assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The threat of an influenza A virus pandemic stems from continual virus spillovers from reservoir species, a tiny fraction of which spark sustained transmission in humans.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Specificity of Morbillivirus Hemagglutinins to Recognize SLAM of Different Species

open access: yesViruses, 2019
Measles virus (MV) and canine distemper virus (CDV) are highly contagious and deadly, forming part of the morbillivirus genus. The receptor recognition by morbillivirus hemagglutinin (H) is important for determining tissue tropism and host range.

Identification of the catalytic motif of the microbial ribosome inactivating cytotoxin colicin E3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Colicin E3 is a cytotoxic ribonuclease that specifically cleaves 16S rRNA at the ribosomal A-site to abolish protein synthesis in sensitive Escherichia coli cells.

Recombinant influenza H7 hemagglutinins induce lower neutralizing antibody titers in mice than do seasonal hemagglutinins

open access: yesInfluenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, 2014
Vaccines against avian influenza viruses often require high hemagglutinin (HA) doses or adjuvants to achieve serological titers associated with protection against disease.

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for
