Risk management externalities in agrifood supply chains

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Firms may under‐ or over‐invest in risk management from the social planner's perspective, resulting in a negative externality on other economic agents in the supply chain. The externality of risk management is particularly relevant for agrifood supply chains, which frequently experience disruptions and play a primary role in preventing major ...

A review of H5Nx avian influenza viruses

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Vaccines and Immunotherapy, 2019
Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs), originating from the A/goose/Guangdong/1/1996 H5 subtype, naturally circulate in wild-bird populations, particularly waterfowl, and often spill over to infect domestic poultry.

Human digital Meissner's corpuscles are not doubly innervated

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent studies have shown that murine and avian Meissner‐like corpuscles are innervated by two distinct mechanoreceptor afferents with different functional properties. In addition, there is evidence that one subpopulation of Meissner corpuscles of monkeys is doubly innervated by mechanoreceptors and nociceptors.

Insights into the Acquisition of Virulence of Avian Influenza Viruses during a Single Passage in Ferrets

open access: yesViruses, 2019
Circulating avian influenza viruses pose a significant threat, with human infections occurring infrequently but with potentially severe consequences. To examine the dynamics and locale of the adaptation process of avian influenza viruses when introduced ...

Chicken Pulmonary MicroRNAs Targeting the PB2 (Segment 1) of Avian Influenza Virus

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The PB2 segment of H5N1 is essential for replication and host adaptation. We screened 200 miRNAs and identified five (gga‐miR‐17‐3p, gga‐miR‐29a‐5p, gga‐miR‐1718, gga‐miR‐16c‐5p, and gga‐miR‐1744‐5p) using thermodynamic stability of heteroduplex, seed sequence complementarity, conservation, and accessibility, offering insights into host antiviral ...

Vaccination and surveillance for high pathogenicity avian influenza in poultry—current situation and perspectives

open access: yesBiologicals
The International Alliance for Biological Standardization (IABS), in collaboration with the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) convened a hybrid meeting on 22-23 October 2024 at the WOAH Headquarters (HQ) in Paris, France to discuss the global state of vaccination and surveillance for high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry.

Comparison of the transmission characteristics of low and high pathogenicity avian influenza A virus (H5N2)

open access: yesEpidemiology and Infection, 2003
Low pathogenicity avian influenza A strains (LPAI) of the H5 and H7 type are noted for their ability to transform into highly pathogenic counterparts (HPAI). Here we compare the transmission characteristics in poultry of LPAI H5N2 (A/Chicken/Pennsylvania/83) and corresponding HPAI virus by means of transmission experiments.

Truncation of the NS1 protein converts a low pathogenic avian influenza virus into a strong interferon inducer in duck cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The NS1 protein of influenza A viruses is known as a nonessential virulence factor inhibiting type I interferon (IFN) production in mammals and in chicken cells. Whether NS1 inhibits the induction of type I IFNs in duck cells is currently unknown.

Immunogenic activity of “ARRIAH-AviFluVac” vaccine against high-pathogenicity H5N1 avian influenza virus relevant for Russia in 2023

open access: yesВетеринария сегодня
Introduction. Vaccination against high-pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) is a well-proven way to control the disease. Inactivated whole-virion products are the most popular among the influenza vaccines.
