Characterisation and modelling of structural bonding at high strain rate

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
These paper deals with the development of new bonded joint modelling for crash application. A new testing device has been set up on Split Hopkinson bars in order to identify adhesive’s properties in assemblies for high strain rate and for different ...

High strain-rate response of additively manufactured light metal alloys

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2022
Understanding the high strain-rate response of materials is essential in applications including aerospace, automotive, and defence. Structures of these applications are often subjected to dynamic loadings of high strain rates and need to mitigate the ...

X-ray microtomographic characterization and quantification of the strain rate dependent failure mechanism in cenosphere epoxy syntactic foams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This work investigates the failure mechanism in cenosphere epoxy syntactic foams at the quasi-static and dynamic strain rates. Split-Hopkinson pressure bar experiments are controlled to stop dynamic deformation of the foams at various strain stages.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

High strain rate tensile and compressive effects in glassy polymers

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
Polymers are increasingly used in impact and complex high rate loading applications. Generally, the mechanical response of glassy polymers under high strain rates has been determined in compression.

High strain-rate deformation analysis of open-cell aluminium foam

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023
This study investigated the high-strain rate mechanical properties of open-cell aluminium foam M-pore®. While previous research has examined the response of this type of foam under quasi-static and transitional dynamic loading conditions, there is a lack

Retention of ductility in high-strength steels [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
To produce high strength alloy steel with retention of ductility, include tempering, cooling and subsequent tempering. Five parameters for optimum results are pretempering temperature, amount of strain, strain rate, temperature during strain, and ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Activated dynamics and effective temperature in a steady state sheared glass

open access: yes, 2007
We conduct nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to measure the shear stress, the average inherent structure energy, and the effective temperature $T_{eff}$ of a sheared model glass as a function of bath temperature $T$ and shear strain rate. For

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.
