Symbiont Succession during Embryonic Development of the European Medicinal Leech, Hirudo verbana [PDF]
ABSTRACT The European medicinal leech, Hirudo verbana , harbors simple microbial communities in the digestive tract and bladder. The colonization history, infection frequency, and growth dynamics of symbionts through host embryogenesis are described using diagnostic PCR and quantitative PCR.

Characterization of a Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH) in Hirudo Verbana. [PDF]
Abstract The endocannabinoid system plays a critical role in modulating both peripheral and central nervous system function. Despite being present throughout the animal kingdom, there has been relatively little investigation of the endocannabinoid system beyond traditional animal models.

Draft mitochondrial genomes of <i>Hirudo medicinalis</i> and <i>Hirudo verbana</i> (Annelida, Hirudinea). [PDF]
Here we present two incomplete mitochondrial genome sequences of Hirudo medicinalis and Hirudo verbana (Annelida, Hirudinea). The corresponding sequences are 14,729 and 14,604 base pairs in length. They contain all mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs and two rRNAs) but lack the non-coding region.

Antimicrobial Role of RNASET2 Protein During Innate Immune Response in the Medicinal Leech Hirudo verbana. [PDF]
The innate immune response represents a first-line defense against pathogen infection that has been widely conserved throughout evolution. Using the invertebrate Hirudo verbana (Annelida, Hirudinea) as an experimental model, we show here that the RNASET2

Exploring the attachment of the Mediterranean medicinal leech (Hirudo verbana) to porous substrates. [PDF]
Haematophagous ectoparasites must ensure a reliable hold to their host during blood meals and, therefore, have evolved a broad spectrum of versatile and effective attachment mechanisms. The Mediterranean medicinal leech (Hirudo verbana), for example, uses suction on both smooth and textured air-tight substrates.

Geographical variability of heavy metal concentrations in tissues of medical leeches (Hirudo medicinalis, Hirudo verbana) and in bottom deposit [PDF]
We present new data of the comparison of the geographical variability of heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, Ni) in tissues of medical leeches (Hirudo medicinalis, Hirudo verbana) and in bottom deposit from places of their inhabitation in
