Building exploration with leeches Hirudo verbana [PDF]
Safe evacuation of people from building and outdoor environments, and search and rescue operations, always will remain actual in course of all socio-technological developments. Modern facilities offer a range of automated systems to guide residents towards emergency exists. The systems are assumed to be infallible. But what if they fail?

Interaction between nanomaterials and the innate immune system across evolution
ABSTRACT Interaction of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with the immune system mainly occurs with cells and molecules of innate immunity, which are present in interface tissues of living organisms. Immuno‐nanotoxicological studies aim at understanding if and when such interaction is inconsequential or may cause irreparable damage. Since innate immunity

Abstract Leeches play important roles in food webs due to their abundance, diversity and feeding habits. Studies using invertebrate‐derived DNA (iDNA) extracted from leech gut contents to target vertebrate DNA have focused on the Indo‐Pacific region and mainly leveraged the leech family Haemadipsidae, composed of bloodfeeding terrestrial leeches, while

Cellulitis Caused by Hirudo orientalis Bites That Lead to an Allergic reaction
The allergic reaction due to leech bites is frequently reported due to complications of leech therapy and also unwanted leech infestation. Regularly, the urticarial papules are common, and itching lasts less than 24 h. In the case of leech biting, dermal infection could be caused by leech gut bacterial flora such as Aeromonas spp and histamine from ...

In our paper, four events of blood sucking on human by juvenile and adult specimens of Placobdella costata were described. We presented with a new data of juvenile specimens' body form and considered information about the potential role of mammals as hosts and dispersion vector of this leech.

The hirudin‐like factor 1 (HLF1) of Hirudo medicinalis belongs to a new class of leech‐derived factors. In previous investigations, HLF1 did not exhibit anticoagulatory activities. Here, we describe the analysis of natural and synthetic variants of HLF1 and HLF‐Hyb, a yet uncharacterized member of the HLF family.

Photoactivation of neurons by laser-generated local heating
We present a method for achieving temporally and spatially precise photoactivation of neurons without the need for genetic expression of photosensitive proteins.
