Methylation-Demethylation Dynamics: Implications of Changes in Acute Kidney Injury

open access: yesAnalytical Cellular Pathology, 2018
Over the years, the epigenetic landscape has grown increasingly complex. Until recently, methylation of DNA and histones was considered one of the most important epigenetic modifications.

SETDB1 prevents TET2-dependent activation of IAP retroelements in naïve embryonic stem cells

open access: yesGenome Biology, 2018
Background Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), which are responsible for 10% of spontaneous mouse mutations, are kept under control via several epigenetic mechanisms. The H3K9 histone methyltransferase SETDB1 is essential for ERV repression in embryonic stem

Practitioner Review: Infant mental health meets cell and molecular biology – a look to the future

open access: yesJournal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, EarlyView.
Background A major research effort in the past two decades has begun to illuminate how experience ‘gets under the skin’ – that is – the cellular and molecular processes that are associated with adversity and resilience. Methods We selectively review three areas of this research: epigenetics, especially DNA methylation, telomere length, and inflammatory

Transposable element‐mediated DNA methylation of the NAC20 and NAC26 promoters led to a maternal effect on grain filling

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
The rice transcription factor genes NAC20 and NAC26 regulate grain filling and show allele‐specific maternal expression due to transposable element insertions and paternal hypermethylation in their 5' upstream regions. Geographical analyses showed that japonica varieties that originated at high latitudes carried these transposable elements.

Suppression of Gluconeogenic Gene Expression by LSD1-Mediated Histone Demethylation

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Aberrant gluconeogenic gene expression is associated with diabetes, glycogen storage disease, and liver cancer. However, little is known how these genes are regulated at the chromatin level. In this study, we investigated in HepG2 cells whether histone demethylation is a potential mechanism.

Epigenetic Regulation in the Pathogenesis of Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
The aim of this narrative literature review was to identify epigenetic marks associated with periodontitis and to place them in a biological context. The literature was reviewed based on pre‐defined criteria. Cell type specific chromatin and mRNA modifications were included.

The epigenetic control of E-box and Myc-dependent chromatin modifications regulate the licensing of lamin B2 origin during cell cycle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Recent genome-wide mapping of the mammalian replication origins has suggested the role of transcriptional regulatory elements in origin activation. However, the nature of chromatin modifications associated with such trans-factors or epigenetic marks ...

Finding balance: the dynamic interplay between H3K27me3 writers and erasers in regulating environmental plasticity and memory

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Subject to an ever‐changing world, plants must respond to harmful conditions and environmental fluctuations. Their evolutionary success can be attributed to their plasticity in both perceiving and integrating these variations to facilitate adaptation.
