Development of hollow-core photonic bandgap fibres free of surface modes
Conventional optical fibres can only guide light in a high refractive index core by total internal reflection. By using total internal reflections it is not possible to guide light in an air core.

Anti-resonant hexagram hollow core fibers
Various simple anti-resonant, single cladding layer, hollow core fiber structures are examined. We show that the spacing between core and jacket glass and the shape of the support struts can be used to optimize confinement loss. We demonstrate the detrimental effect on confinement loss of thick nodes at the strut intersections and present a fabricated ...

A Low‐Cost, Handheld Optical Stiffness Sensor for Minimally Invasive Surgery
A novel handheld stiffness sensor is presented for real‐time tissue stiffness characterization. By simultaneously sensing contact force and tissue deformation, the device enables accurate stiffness quantification without requiring precise manual control. This approach offers a promising solution for intraoperative tumor detection and minimally invasive

Perivascular matrix densification promotes the emergence of aberrant endothelial tip cells (ATECs) that invade and persist within fibrotic microenvironments. Using in vivo lineage tracing and a human microvessel model, this study shows that fibrous matrix cues destabilize VE‐cadherin–mediated junctions to gate TGF‐β signaling, inducing a pro ...

Long period fiber gratings in anti-resonant hollow core fiber
Long period gratings, based on anti-resonant hollow core fibers (AR-HCFs), are fabricated using a high-frequency CO _2 laser pulse by carving periodic grooves. This device exhibits both axial strain and bending sensing characteristics.

In-fiber polarimeters based on hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers
In-fiber polarimeters or polarization mode interferometers (PMIs) are fabricated by cascading two CO2-laser-induced in-fiber polarizers along a piece of hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber. Since the two interfering beams are the orthogonal polarizations of the fundamental mode, which are tightly confined to the core and have much lower loss than higher

Perspective: Hollow Core Optical Fibres for Ultraviolet and Visible Wavelengths
Hollow core optical fibres bypass material constraints that limit optical fibres at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. However, their challenging fabrication has limited their development, and significant gains in performance remain possible. In this perspective we outline approaches to enable the next generation of fibres for shorter wavelengths ...
