Emerging Noninvasive Biomolecular Checkpoints for Healthy Microbiomes

open access: yesAdvanced Gut &Microbiome Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Dysbiosis commonly impacts otherwise healthy individuals over the age of 50 due to seemingly innocuous changes in diet, hydration, or physical activity. Noninvasive biomarkers are emerging as checkpoints for immune health, energy‐yielding metabolization, and oxidative stress during the aging process.

A systematic review and meta‐analysis of functional vitamin B12 status among adult vegans

open access: yesNutrition Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 463-479, December 2024.
Abstract The dietary intake of vitamin B12 among unsupplemented vegans is notably lower compared to both vegetarians and omnivores. Prolonged low intakes of vitamin B12, such as seen in those adhering to a vegan diet, lead to physiological deficiency of vitamin B12 and an elevated risk of B12‐related morbidity.

How do we evaluate a marginally low B12 level? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The best way to evaluate a low-normal B12 level is to check serum methylmalonic acid and homocysteine levels1 (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, based on consistent level 2 or 3 studies).

Increase in circulating holotranscobalamin after oral administration of cyanocobalamin or hydroxocobalamin in healthy adults with low and normal cobalamin status

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Nutrition, 2017
PurposeTo investigate the absorption of synthetic cyanocobalamin and natural occurring hydroxocobalamin in populations with low and normal cobalamin (vitamin B12) status.MethodsWe included adults with low (n = 59) and normal (n = 42) cobalamin status and

Microangiopathic thrombocytopenia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency responding to plasma exchange

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 205, Issue 4, Page 1546-1550, October 2024.
Summary A young adult African American female presented with normocytic microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, elevated lactate dehydrogenase and thrombocytopenia. The patient responded to therapeutic plasma exchanges (TPE) for presumed thrombotic microangiopathy caused by thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP).

Intranasal vitamin B12 administration in elderly patients: A randomized controlled comparison of two dosage regimens

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 90, Issue 8, Page 1975-1983, August 2024.
Aim Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in the elderly population. Standard treatment via intramuscular injections, however, has several disadvantages. Safer and more convenient dosage forms such as intranasal are therefore being explored. This study compares the effects of two intranasal vitamin B12 dosage regimens in elderly vitamin B12‐deficient ...

Serum vitamin B12, distal symmetrical polyneuropathy and anaemia in type 2 diabetes: the Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase 2

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, Volume 54, Issue 4, Page 575-581, April 2024.
Abstract Background There are limited data relating to the effects of metformin‐associated vitamin B12 deficiency on the risk of distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN) and megaloblastic anaemia in well‐characterised community‐based cohorts. Aims To assess inter‐relationships between metformin therapy, vitamin B12 deficiency assessed using serum ...

Hampered Vitamin B12 Metabolism in Gaucher Disease?

open access: yesJournal of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Screening, 2017
Untreated vitamin B 12 deficiency manifests clinically with hematological abnormalities and combined degeneration of the spinal cord and polyneuropathy and biochemically with elevated homocysteine (Hcy) and methylmalonic acid (MMA).
