Some evidence suggests that the home numeracy environment (HNE) is related to children’s numeracy. Socioeconomic status (SES) and language minority status can also influence children’s HNE and numeracy. Limited HNE research focuses on dual language learners (DLLs). Using a sample of preschool-aged children ( n = 98) from low socioeconomic status (SES)

Age‐related differences in the relation between the home numeracy environment and numeracy skills
Infant and Child Development, 2017AbstractThe home numeracy environment (HNE) is often predictive of children's early mathematics skills, though the findings are mixed. Overall, research on kindergarten‐aged children demonstrates a relation between the HNE and early numeracy skills, whereas findings for preschool‐aged children are more equivocal.

Home to School: Numeracy Practices and Mathematical Identities
Mathematical Thinking and Learning, 2006Drawing on a perspective of mathematics as situated social practice, we focus on 4 children in an urban preschool classroom and follow those children between home and school sites to shed light on urban children's persistent underachievement in mathematics.

The purpose of this study was to propose and test a model of children's home numeracy experience based on Sénéchal and LeFevre's home literacy model (Child Development, 73 (2002) 445-460). Parents of 183 children starting kindergarten in the fall (median child age=58 months) completed an early home learning experiences questionnaire.

ABSTRACTThe current study analyzed maternal and paternal differential influences on numeracy performance in kindergarten children. Participants were 180 Chilean children from backgrounds of low and high socioeconomic status (SES), their mothers, and their fathers. A path analysis was used to explore the influences of both maternal and paternal numeracy

Take-Home Numeracy Kits for Preschool Children
Australasian Journal of Early Childhood, 2004This paper outlines the practical aspects of a project aimed to offer access to numerate knowledge for preschool children by providing them with take-home numeracy kits. A Koori preschool in an urban regional area of New South Wales, Australia, was involved in the project. The centre catered for 18 four- and five-year-old children.

Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2019
Parents are their children’s most influential educators, and their joint activities can influence these children’s early learning. Past studies with small, non-representative samples do not show a consistent link between early numeracy activities at home and children’s mathematics achievement.

Are Games a Viable Home Numeracy Practice?
2016The promise that mathematics can be taught from a young age through fun, engaging games is an enticing proposition, so enticing that considerable effort has been expended to determine whether gaming is an effective teaching tool. This effort includes not just individual investigations but multiple meta-analyses with a combined evaluation of over 500 ...

Home Numeracy Practices and Preschoolers’ Mathematical Development
International Journal of Educational StudiesThis study examined the relationship between home numeracy experiences and the mathematical development of preschoolers. Guided by a descriptive-correlational research design, the study focused on understanding how various home-based numeracy exposures relate to children’s numeracy skills in early childhood.

Early Education and Development
Research Findings: This study aimed to examine the relationships between HNE (parental numeracy expectations and home numeracy activities) and children's early numeracy skills, as well as the moderating effect of area level in the relationship between home numeracy activities and early numeracy, were explored.
