Impact of host immunity on HTLV-1 pathogenesis: potential of Tax-targeted immunotherapy against ATL

open access: yesRetrovirology, 2019
Human T-cell leukemia virus type-1 (HTLV-1) causes adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), and other inflammatory diseases.

HTLV-1 bZIP factor gene: Its roles in HTLV-1 pathogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Aspects of Medicine, 2010
The HTLV-1 bZIP factor (HBZ) gene is transcribed as an anti-sense transcript of HTLV-1 from the 3' long terminal repeat (LTR). Recent studies showed that the HBZ gene was expressed in all ATL cases, suggesting its critical role in leukemogenesis. In addition, only the HBZ gene sequence remains intact, unaffected by nonsense mutations and deletion.

Perceptions of donor screening—Do I always need to tell the truth?

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The Donor Health Assessment Questionnaire (DHQ) is fundamental to blood safety. We describe attitudes towards truthfulness among first‐time donors who tested positive for transfusion transmissible infections and those who did not.

Absence of HTLV-1/2 infection and dermatological diseases in Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil

open access: yesRevista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical, 2014
Introduction The prevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) infection is heterogeneous across different populations. We tested the hypothesis that HTLV-1/2 infection occurs more often in dermatological patients.

Epidemiological analysis of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infection among different population in Central China. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BACKGROUND: HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 are retroviruses linked etiologically to various human diseases, and both of them can be transmitted by vertical route, sexual intercourse, blood transfusion and intravenous drug use.

Human T-lymphotropic virus and transfusion safety. Does one size fit all? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV-1 and HTLV-2) are associated with a variety of human diseases, including some severe ones. Transfusion transmission of HTLV through cellular blood components is undeniable.

Kinetics of HTLV-1 reactivation from latency quantified by single-molecule RNA FISH and stochastic modelling

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2019
The human T cell leukemia virus HTLV-1 establishes a persistent infection in vivo in which the viral sense-strand transcription is usually silent at a given time in each cell.

HTLV-1 and Innate Immunity [PDF]

open access: yesViruses, 2011
Innate immunity plays a critical role in the host response to a viral infection. The innate response has two main functions. First, it triggers effector mechanisms that restrict the infection. Second, it primes development of the adaptive response, which completes the elimination of the pathogen or of infected cells.

Adult T‐cell leukemia/lymphoma in French Guiana (1990–2019): Epidemiology, clinical features, and HTLV‐1 genetic diversity in the two main ethnic populations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 158, Issue 6, Page 1528-1540, 15 March 2026.
What's new? Adult T‐cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a rare and aggressive malignancy caused by human T‐cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV‐1). The authors comprehensively analyzed the epidemiological and clinical features of ATL over a 30‐year period in French Guiana, a region with high HTLV‐1 endemicity and a multiethnic population.
