Too real for comfort? Uncanny responses to computer generated faces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
As virtual humans approach photorealistic perfection, they risk making real humans uncomfortable. This intriguing phenomenon, known as the uncanny valley, is well known but not well understood.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Human Dignity and the Commercial Appropriation of Personality: Towards a Cosmopolitan Consensus in Publicity Rights?

open access: yesSCRIPTed: A Journal of Law, Technology & Society, 2004
This article is concerned with the commercial appropriation of human personality and its regulation in different legal systems. Where accepted, so called “publicity rights” allow for the exclusive commercial exercise of a persona’s publicity values.

Masked-speech Recognition Using Human and Synthetic Cloned Speech

open access: yesTrends in Hearing
Voice cloning is used to generate synthetic speech that mimics vocal characteristics of human talkers. This experiment used voice cloning to compare human and synthetic speech for intelligibility, human-likeness, and perceptual similarity, all tested in ...

A physicochemical descriptor-based scoring scheme for effective and rapid filtering of kinase-like chemical space

open access: yesJournal of Cheminformatics, 2012
Background The current chemical space of known small molecules is estimated to exceed 1060 structures. Though the largest physical compound repositories contain only a few tens of millions of unique compounds, virtual screening of databases of this size ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Docking and QSAR Studies of Camptothecin Derivatives as Inhibitor of DNA Topoisomerase-I [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Camptothecin (CPT) is a cytotoxic quinoline alkaloid which inhibits the DNA enzyme Topoisomerase-I (Topo-I) and has shown remarkable anticancer activity in preliminary clinical trials. The major limitation is its low solubility and high adverse reaction.
