Volitional exercise elicits physiological and molecular improvements in the severe D2.mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 2, Page 849-867, 15 January 2026.
Abstract figure legend This study investigated the effects of volitional exercise on muscle health in the more severe D2.mdx model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We showed that 8–10 weeks of a relatively high volume of voluntary wheel running (VWR) in D2.mdx animals augmented select muscle mass and normalized ex vivo muscle force compared to ...

Neuromuscular junction instability with inactivity: morphological and functional changes after 10 days of bed rest in older adults

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 2, Page 868-885, 15 January 2026.
Abstract figure legend This figure summarises the study of neuromuscular junction (NMJ) changes in 10 older males following a 10 day bed rest period. Baseline (BR0) and post‐bed rest (BR10) assessments were conducted using intramuscular EMG (iEMG) to measure NMJ transmission. At BR0 and BR10, muscle biopsies were obtained to analyse NMJ morphology, and

Maternal obesity during pregnancy disrupts iron homeostasis and promotes fetal hypoxia in the mouse

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 1, Page 566-581, 1 January 2026.
Abstract figure legend Maternal obesity induces systemic inflammation and high insulin and leptin levels, potentially promoting hepcidin release into circulation and thus iron sequestration in specific tissue compartments. This results in low iron availability in the mother with potential detrimental effects on the fetus, including hypoxia.

Skeletal muscle‐specific PGC‐1α‐b overexpression prevents eccentric contraction‐induced muscle injury through an utrophin‐independent pathway in mice

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, January 2026.
PGC‐1α‑b overexpression protects glycolytic muscle fibers from eccentric contraction–induced injury. Eccentric contractions caused marked membrane damage and loss of maximal isometric torque in wild‐type and utrophin‐deficient mice, particularly within MyHC IIb–dominant fibers.
