Both C7H14O3 and C6H14O3Si crystallize as racemates from acetone solution, the former incorporating water of crystallization (C7H14O3.0.5H2O). The crystal structures display extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonding involving the hydroxy and carboxylic acid groups to give polymeric networks.

A micromethod for identification of hydroxy acids
Analytical Biochemistry, 1968Abstract A micromethod for the identification of hydroxy acids is described. The method depends on converting the hydroxy acid to the corresponding bromo acid with phosphorus tribromide and then dehydrobrominating the bromo acid with potassium tert -butoxide in tert -butyl alcohol.

Abstract3‐Hydroxy acids were synthesised in good yield from ketones and carboxylic acids using lithium naphthalenide in the presence of diethylamine. From cyclohexanone and propionic acid, 2‐(1′‐hydroxycyclohexan‐1′‐yl) propionic acid (I) was obtained in 98.3% yield.

Free and bound fatty acids and hydroxy fatty acids in the living and decomposing eelgrass Zostera marina L. [PDF]
Very early diagenetic processes of free, esterified and amide or glycosidically bound fatty acids and hydroxy fatty acids present in well documented samples of living and decomposing eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) were investigated.
