Inhibition of pathogenic non-enveloped viruses by 25-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2014
AbstractRecent studies reported a broad but selective antiviral activity of 25-hydroxycholesterol (25HC) against enveloped viruses, being apparently inactive against non-enveloped viruses. Here we show that 25HC is endowed with a marked antiviral activity against three pathogenic non-enveloped viruses, i.e.

Quantitative detection of free 24S-hydroxycholesterol, and 27-hydroxycholesterol from human serum [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2014
Cholesterol metabolism is important for the maintenance of myelin and neuronal membranes in the central nervous system. Blood concentrations of the brain specific cholesterol metabolite 24S-hydroxysterol to the peripheral metabolite 27-hydroxycholesterol may be useful surrogate markers for neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease ...

25-Hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol induce neuroinflammation by activating microglia

open access: yes, 2023
Abstract Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels and side-chain oxygenated cholesterol molecules (oxysterols) are elevated in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and high cholesterol levels increase the risk of AD. However, roles of high cholesterol and side-chain oxysterols in IL-1β expression remain to be determined.

Formation of oxysterols during oxidation of low density lipoprotein by peroxynitrite, myoglobin, and copper

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1996
Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in the artery wall leads to the formation of cholesterol oxidation products that may result in cytotoxicity.

Metabolism of 4β-Hydroxycholesterol in Humans [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2002
One of the major oxysterols in the human circulation is 4 beta-hydroxycholesterol formed from cholesterol by the drug-metabolizing enzyme cytochrome P450 3A4. Deuterium-labeled 4 beta-hydroxycholesterol was injected into two healthy volunteers, and the apparent half-life was found to be 64 and 60 h, respectively.

25-Hydroxycholesterol in health and diseases [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research
Cholesterol is an essential structural component of all membranes of mammalian cells where it plays a fundamental role not only in cellular architecture, but also, for example, in signaling pathway transduction, endocytosis process, receptor functioning and recycling, or cytoskeleton remodeling.

Inhibition of herpes simplex-1 virus replication by 25-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2017
Oxysterols are known pleiotropic molecules whose antiviral action has been recently discovered. Here reported is the activity of a panel of oxysterols against HSV-1 with the identification of a new mechanism of action. A marked antiviral activity not only of 25HC but also of 27HC against HSV-1 was observed either if the oxysterols were added before or ...

Effects of 26-Aminocholesterol, 27-Hydroxycholesterol, and 25-Hydroxycholesterol on Proliferation and Cholesterol Homeostasis in Arterial Myocytes [PDF]

open access: yesArteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, 1995
AbstractThe major relation existing between cell growth and cholesterol homeostasis prompted us to investigate the effect of 26-aminocholesterol (26-NH2), 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OH), and 25-hydroxycholesterol (25-OH) on these cellular events. To test this relation, we incubated human and rat arterial myocytes with the sterols for 72 hours.

Bile acid synthesis in man. II. Determination of 7 alpha-hydroxycholesterol, (22R)-22-hydroxycholesterol, and 26-hydroxycholesterol in human meconium.

open access: yesJournal of lipid research, 1977
7 alpha-Hydroxycholesterol, (22R)-22-hydroxycholesterol and 26-hydroxycholesterol have been quantitated in human meconium. The method used tetrahydrofuran for extraction and solvolysis of the sulfate esters, liquid partition chromatography for the separation of the hydroxysterols, gas-liquid chromatography for quantitation, gas-liquid chromatography ...

The oncogenic roles of 27‑hydroxycholesterol in glioblastoma

open access: yesOncology Letters, 2019
Glioblastoma is the most frequent primary malignant brain tumor in adults. Oxysterols are oxidation products of cholesterol generated by enzymatic reactions. 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-HC), an oxysterol, is an abundant metabolite of cholesterol. 27-HC significantly accelerates mammary cancer growth, proliferation and progression in experimental models ...
