Hyperforin: More than an antidepressant bioactive compound?
Life Sciences, 2006Hyperforin is a lipophilic compound that is present in great amounts in St. John's wort and that has been described as the main responsible for the antidepressant effects of this medicinal plant. In the last few years, evidence has accumulated pointing to other different effects of hyperforin with potential pharmacological interest.

Evaluation of Hyperforin Analogues for Inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase
Medicinal Chemistry, 2005The acylphloroglucinol hyperforin, a constituent of the herb Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort), was recently identified as potent and direct inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), the key enzyme in the biosynthesis of proinflammatory leukotrienes. In this study, naturally occurring analogues of hyperforin, isolated from H.

Hyperforin Analogues from St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Journal of Natural Products, 2000Three oxygenated analogues of the prenylated phloroglucinol hyperforin (3-5) were isolated from the aerial parts of Hypericum perforatum and their structures elucidated by spectroscopic methods.

Hyperforin and its analogues inhibit CYP3A4 enzyme activity
Phytochemistry, 2006Literature indicates that herb-drug interaction of St. John's wort is largely due to increased metabolism of the co-administered drugs that are the substrates of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 enzyme, alteration of the activity and/or expression of the enzyme. The major St.

Mechanistic Insights into the Antileukemic Activity of Hyperforin
Current Cancer Drug Targets, 2012Hyperforin is a prenylated phloroglucinol present in the medicinal plant St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum). The compound has many biological properties, including antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antitumor activities. This review focuses on the in vitro antileukemic effects of purified hyperforin and related mechanisms in ...

Inhibition of vesicular uptake of monoamines by hyperforin
Life Sciences, 2002Hyperforin is the major active ingredient of Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort), a traditional antidepressant medication. This study evaluated its inhibitory effects on the synaptic uptake of monoamines in rat forebrain homogenates, comparing the nature of the inhibition at synaptic and vesicular monoamine transporters.

Three New Hyperforin Analogues from Hypericum perforatum
Journal of Natural Products, 2000Three new analogues of hyperforin (1), pyrano[7,28-b]hyperforin (2), (2R,3R,4S,6R)-6-methoxycarbonyl-3-methyl-4,6-di(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-2-(2-methyl-1-oxopropyl)-3-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)cyclohexanone (3), and (2R,3R,4S,6S)-3-methyl-4,6-di(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-2-(2-methyl-1-oxopropyl)-3-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)cyclohexanone (4), were isolated from the aerial

Hyperforin acts as an angiogenesis inhibitor.
Planta medica, 2006Hyperforin is a plant compound from Hypericum perforatum that inhibits tumor cell proliferation in vitro by induction of apoptosis. Here, we report that hyperforin also acts as an angiogenesis inhibitor in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, hyperforin blocked microvessel formation of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC) on a complex ...
