Prominent role of exopeptidase DPP III in estrogen-mediated protection against hyperoxia in vivo

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2016
A number of age-related diseases have a low incidence in females, which is attributed to a protective effect of sex hormones. For instance, the female sex hormone estrogen (E2) has a well established cytoprotective effect against oxidative stress, which ...

Systematic investigation of changes in oxidized cerebral cytochrome c oxidase concentration during frontal lobe activation in healthy adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Using transcranial near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure changes in the redox state of cerebral cytochrome c oxidase (Δ[oxCCO]) during functional activation in healthy adults is hampered by instrumentation and algorithm issues.

LAT1/SLC7A5‐mediated amino acid uptake is regulated by redox signals triggered by formyl‐peptide receptor 2

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 9, Page 2637-2655, May 2026.
FPR2 activation mediates NOX‐dependent LAT1 expression and, in turn, promotes mTORC1 signaling. Upon stimulation with WKYMVm, the FPR2‐NOX2‐ROS axis upregulates LAT1 via increased c‐Myc phosphorylation and decreased miR‐126. Additionally, it promotes CD98 translocation to the plasma membrane.

Oxygen Stewardship in Adult Critical Care: A Quality Improvement Initiative

open access: yesNursing in Critical Care, Volume 31, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Oxygen therapy is commonly administered in critical care, yet patients frequently receive oxygen above recommended saturation targets. Excessive oxygen exposure may contribute to avoidable harm and unnecessary resource use. Despite guideline recommendations, reliable adherence to oxygen titration targets in routine intensive care ...

HS-GC–MS analysis of volatile organic compounds after hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress: a validation study

open access: yesIntensive Care Medicine Experimental
Background Exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly hydrocarbons from oxidative stress-induced lipid peroxidation, are associated with hyperoxia exposure.

Neonatal intensive care and its application in Malta [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The introduction of neonatal techniques has proved vital in the reduction of infant mortality rates. This article describes 4 important and basic techniques in neonatal intensive care; ventilation, nutrition, monitoring and cerebral assessment.

Xenoperfusion—The Transformative Role of Machine Perfusion in Xenotransplantation

open access: yesXenotransplantation, Volume 33, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT Recent advances in xenotransplantation have gained substantial public and clinical attention as genetically modified porcine organs are now being transplanted into living human recipients. While only case reports have been published to date, the first clinical trials for kidney xenotransplantation are now ongoing.

Influence of low‐dose dopamine on exercise in fibrosing interstitial lung disease

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 5, Page 2682-2695, 1 May 2026.
ABSTRACT Fibrotic interstitial lung disease (FILD) is associated with dyspnoea and exercise intolerance. In other cardiorespiratory conditions, heightened carotid body (CB) chemoreflex sensitivity is associated with reduced exercise capacity. We tested the hypothesis that CB chemoreflex inhibition would improve exercise endurance time (EET) and reduce ...

Oxygen diffusion kinetics, buffering capacity and phenotype: A narrative review of oxygen physiology and later phenotype in very preterm infants

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 5, Page 2485-2493, 1 May 2026.
Abstract Clinicians often view exposure to supplementary oxygen in preterm infants as a simple reciprocal trade‐off between mortality and the risk of vision‐threatening retinopathy, but this perspective oversimplifies the underlying physiology. Oxygen moves through a series of spatially distinct compartments without intrinsic regulation, with Fick's ...

Biochemical, endocrine, and hematological factors in human oxygen tolerance extension: Predictive studies 6 [PDF]

open access: yes
The Predictive Studies VI (Biochemical, endocrine, and hematological factors in human oxygen tolerance extension) Program consisted of two related areas of research activity, integrated in design and performance, that were each based on an ongoing ...
