Hypoglycemia rarely exists in humans outside diabetes mellitus treated with insulin and/or sulfonylureas. Because hypoglycemia produces marked discomfort, lasting for hours, and may progress to severe neuroglycopenia with cognitive dysfunction, unconsciousness, sometimes even epilepsy, hypoglycemia is highly feared by patients.
