The Panorama of Cerebral Palsy in Sweden Part XIV Shows Further Decrease in Prevalence and Severity in the Birth‐Years 2015–2018

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To describe prevalence, background and gross motor function of cerebral palsy (CP) in western Sweden 2015–2018 and compare to birth‐years 1999–2014. Methods Population‐based study covering 108 963 live births in 2015–2018. Birth characteristics, neuroimaging findings and motor outcome were analysed and prevalence calculated and compared to

No Association Between Umbilical Cord pH and Special Educational Needs Among Children With Normal 5‐Minute Apgar Scores

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim Most infants with a low cord pH have reassuring 5‐min Apgar scores of 7–10, but their long‐term outcomes have been poorly studied. We examined whether cord pH predicted later special educational needs (SEN). Method This nationwide register‐based study was conducted in Denmark, which provides universal cord pH screening.

Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy : identifying newborns who will benefit from therapeutic hypothermia in developing countries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) is only one of the many causes of neonatal encephalopathy, with no definitive test to make the diagnosis and very little available in terms of neuroprotective strategies, except for the use of therapeutic ...

Probable sepsis‐associated encephalopathy as a component of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in a cat with pyothorax

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
A 2‐year‐old male neutered domestic shorthair cat with bacterial pyothorax was referred to a tertiary hospital for treatment of sepsis. He met criteria for multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and developed new‐onset neurological dysfunction subsequent to the development of sepsis.

New perspectives on VEGF signalling in Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
Emery et al. bring together findings from recent multi‐omic studies, including single‐cell mRNA analysis of human post‐mortem brain tissue, and proteomic analysis of matched CSF and blood samples in large clinical studies. The authors present evidence of the involvement of altered VEGF signalling in vascular and immune dysfunction and neurodegeneration

Human brain matters: Navigating the neuropathology of COVID‐19

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
Severe COVID‐19 is associated with vascular dysregulation and chronic neuroinflammation, leading to axonal injury and neurodegeneration. In long COVID or PASC, persistent alterations in neuroimaging and biofluid biomarkers reflect ongoing neuronal damage and neuroinflammation, contributing to long‐term neurological symptoms including fatigue, cognitive

[Induced hypothermia in infants born with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy]

open access: yes, 2010
Randomised studies have demonstrated the efficacy of hypothermia for the treatment of perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term or late preterm infants.

New brain protection strategies for infants with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy

open access: yes, 2018
Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) occurs in 1.5–2/1000 births in developed countries and 26/1000 births in developing countries. Therapeutic cooling to a core temperature of 33.5°C for 72 h has become the mainstay of treatment for term infants with ...
