Ibotenic acid and thioibotenic acid: a remarkable difference in activity at group III metabotropic glutamate receptors

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Pharmacology, 2004
In this study, we have determined and compared the pharmacological profiles of ibotenic acid and its isothiazole analogue thioibotenic acid at native rat ionotropic glutamate (iGlu) receptors and at recombinant rat metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors

Tolerance of Drosophila Flies to Ibotenic Acid Poisons in Mushrooms

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 2006
The mushroom genus Amanita has a spectrum of chemical compounds affecting survival and performance of animals. Ibotenic acid is one of such compounds found in some Amanita mushrooms. We studied the effects of ibotenic acid and its derivative, muscimol, on egg-to-pupa survival, pupation time, and pupal size in five Drosophila species (Diptera ...

Ibotenic acid-induced neuronal degeneration: A morphological and neurochemical study

Experimental Brain Research, 1979
Possible neurotoxic actions of intracerebral injections of ibotenic acid, a conformationally restricted analogue of glutamic acid, have been evaluated in rat brain and compared with those of kainic acid. Light microscopical analysis revealed that ibotenic acid produced a marked disappearance of nerve cells in all areas studied, namely striatum, the ...

Effect of ibotenic acid on chloride permeability of insect muscle-fibres

Comparative and General Pharmacology, 1973
Abstract 1. Ionic conductances ( G ) of the resting membrane of the anterior coxal adductor muscle-fibre of the locust Schistocerca gregaria were determined by ion substitution. The following values were obtained: G K = 58.6 per cent and G C1 = 41.4 per cent in standard (chloride) saline, G CH3SO4 = 12.0 per cent in methylsulphate saline ...

Inhibitory action of ibotenic acid on the crayfish neuromuscular junction

Brain Research, 1980
The effect of ibotenic acid on the crayfish neuromuscular junction was investigated. Ibotenate reduced dose-dependently the amplitude of the excitatory junctional potentials (EJPs) elicited by repetitive stimulation of the excitatory axons. Ibotenate did not affect facilitation of successive EJPs.

Comparison of electrolytic and ibotenic acid lesions in the lateral hypothalamus

Brain Research, 1985
Electrolytic lesions in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) seriously affect ingestive behavior and sensorimotor functions in the rat. We here report that bilateral infusions of the neurotoxin, ibotenic acid (IBO) in the LH yield a decrease in body weight, but not to the same extent as electrolytic lesions. The sensorimotor impairments were most severe after

Glutamate and aspartate agonists structurally related to ibotenic acid

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 1981
This mini-review describes a noval class of excitatory heterocyclic amino acid. The selective interactions of these synthetic amino acids with the central glutamic acid (GLU) and aspartic acid (ASP) receptors have been established on the basis of microelectrophoretic techniques using glutamic acid diethyl ester (GDEE) and alpha-aminoadipic acid (alpha ...

Epidural kainate, but not ibotenate, produces lesions in local and distant regions of the brain. A comparison of the intracerebral actions of kainic acid and ibotenic acid

Journal of Neuroscience Methods, 1982
Epidural placement of ibotenic acid (Ibo) is described as a new technique for easy and successful lesioning of cortical neurons. The method works reliably without apparent damage to passing or underlying fibers and without causing distant lesion effects. In rats, the favorable effects of epidural placement of Ibo on behavior and on neuronal tissue were

Excitatory Amino Acids: Studies on the Biochemical and Chemical Stability of Ibotenic Acid and Related Compounds

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1985
Abstract: The complex pharmacological profile (excitation/inhibition) of ibotenic acid on single neurons in the mammalian CNS prompted studies on the stability of ibotenic acid and a number of structurally related excitatory amino acids under different in vitro conditions in the presence or absence of enzymes.
