Development and Challenges of Pathogen Molecular Point‐Of‐Care Testing Systems Based on Microfluidic Technology

open access: yesiLABMED
Molecular point‐of‐care testing (POCT) is characterized by high sensitivity, low reagent demand, fast mixing speed, rapid turnaround time, and ease of use, making it appealing for diagnosing infectious diseases.

Development and validation of a national reference material system for quality control of chikungunya virus nucleic acid detection assays

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology
The absence of a World Health Organization (WHO) international standard for Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) nucleic acid testing has long impeded the comparability of diagnostic results across different assays and platforms.

Safety of Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Therapies in Arthritis Patients

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2014
Purpose. Inflammatory and rheumatic arthritis remain leading causes of disability worldwide. The arthritis therapeutic area commands the largest market for the prescription of biological and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Organogenesis in vitro

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Cell Biology, 2021
Organoids are three-dimensional structures that self-organize from human pluripotent stem cells or primary tissue, potentially serving as a traceable and manipulatable platform to facilitate our understanding of organogenesis. Despite the ongoing advancement in generating organoids of diverse systems, biological applications of in vitro generated ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Diagnosing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in UK NHS ICUs: the perceived value and role of a novel optical technology

open access: yesDiagnostic and Prognostic Research, 2022
Background Diagnosing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in an intensive care unit (ICU) is a complex process. Our aim was to collect, evaluate and represent the information relating to current clinical practice for the diagnosis of VAP in UK NHS ICUs,

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Efficacy and Safety of Platelet Inhibitors

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2013
Ischemic heart disease is the second leading cause of death in the world. The proportion of deaths resulting from this condition has decreased in the last two decades, mainly as a result of improved primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular ...
