The Weight of Genetic Drift: A Pedigree-Based Evaluation of the Breton Horse Population in Brazil
The genetic diversity of Breton horses in Brazil is a critical concern, mainly due to the small population size and low number of births per year. Given that the inbreeding was overlooked by breeders for multiple generations, we estimated the genetic ...

Background Estimating inbreeding, which is omnipresent and inevitable in livestock populations, is a primary goal for management and animal breeding especially for those interested in mitigating the negative consequences of inbreeding.

On the prediction of simultaneous inbreeding coefficients at multiple loci
A new deterministic method for predicting simultaneous inbreeding coefficients at three and four loci is presented. The method involves calculating the conditional probability of IBD (identical by descent) at one locus given IBD at other loci, and multiplying this probability by the prior probability of the latter loci being simultaneously IBD.

Medical geneticists connect relatives having the same disease into a family structure called a pedigree. Genetic linkage analysis uses pedigrees to find the approximate chromosomal locations of disease-causing genes. The problem of choosing a pedigree is

Decades of Enclosure Protection Exert Composite Effects on Grassland Grasshopper Communities
Decades of enclosure protection have altered grasshopper community structure, with species‐specific effects on population dynamics. For the low‐mobility grasshopper Chorthippus fallax, abundance did not differ strongly between exclosure‐protected and overgrazed areas, but its egg development duration was longer in exclosures. The two C.

An indirect approach to the extensive calculation of relationship coefficients
A method was described for calculating population statistics on relationship coefficients without using corresponding individual data. It relied on the structure of the inverse of the numerator relationship matrix between individuals under investigation ...

We compared genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure in the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina; left panel), Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii; bottom right), and spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata; top right) sampled in areas of co‐occurrence across ~49,160 km2.

Long‐term monitoring has revealed hybridisation attempts between the Critically Endangered Kuaka Whenua Hou (KWH, Pelecanoides whenuahouensis) and the abundant Kuaka (P. urinatrix). Here we use modelling based on population monitoring data in tandem with genomic data to investigate these attempts and the risk they pose to KWH recovery.
